I have used many of the popular libraries to read html and saw variations on this website but have had no success. I go to a website, call it www.google.com. I enter passwords and I am still at www.google.com. While in this website after using my password, I hit the F12 key to view the html. Inside the html, I see a number that changes at a rate of about 2Hz. This number is also on the webpage. I want to record this changing value over a period of time. I have tried to view that page using Python and my result is a new login page of the same name. I am currently using an OCR system but it is slow and it sometimes gets an incorrect value. This website is a service that I pay a little to use. I can send a request for the value but they get angry because the site cannot handle the multiple requests. Is there a way for me to simple read the html file in Python? I have tried to use Python to open the site but it sees it as not a person.

I am trying to write a python script that will check every hour for open seats in the organic chemistry class at my university and email me if it finds one so that I can then log in and register for it (I am not quite good enough to have it register me automatically). I think that I have gotten the login process correct, but when I navigate manually to the correct page to get the URL, it has the same URL as the page before it, which doesn't make much sense. How can I find the correct URL, or if I need to POST, how do I find the right spot and the right commands? Can I navigate within the website without opening a browser, since this will be running hourly in the background while I am trying to use the computer? Unfortunately I cannot share the website, since it contains personal information.
So I had a number of amino acid sequence strings that I wanted to use as input into a tool that studies its interactions with certain components of the human immune system (http://www.cbs.dtu.dk/services/NetMHCcons/).
I wanted to ask what, if any, would be a way of accessing, inputting data and getting the output, via a script (R or python preferably). My main issue was I had a lot of sequences that need to be queried separately so wanted to automate the whole thing. The website has one field that reads "Submission" which takes in the string input. There is another field "select species/loci" which gives a drop down menu from which an option needs to be selected. Lastly there's a "submit" button. The output simply loads on the page after hitting submit.
I've tentatively poked around with RSelenium and Rcurl but wanted to ask if there was a more efficient method.
I took a look at what it'd take to send a POST request to this service from Python, and it looks possible:
this form takes in "multipart/form-data" (see: How to send a "multipart/form-data" with requests in python?), you'll need to send your data in this format. You could inspect a request from the browser (using the dev tools) and copy the fields from there as a starting point.
once the form is submitted, it doesn't give you the result right away. You'd need to get your job ID from the response, and then poll the URL: http://www.cbs.dtu.dk/cgi-bin/webface2.fcgi?jobid={your_job_id}&wait=20 until it gives you the result
the result will then need to be downloaded and parsed

I would recommend on a searching site that you either use Selenium or Requests with sessions, the advantage of Selenium it it will probably work however it will be slow. For Selenium you should just use the Selenium IDE (Firefox add on) to record what you do then get the HTML from the webpage and use beautifulsoup to parse the data.
If you want to scrape the data quickly and without using much resources I usually use Requests with Sessions. To scrape a website like this you should open up a modern web browser (Firefox, Chrome) and use the network tools for that browser (usually located in developer tools or via right click inspect element). Once you are recording the network you can interact with the webpage to see the connections made to the server. In an example search they may use suggestions e.g
https://suggest.example.com.au/smart-suggest?query=4000&n=7®ions=false
The response then will probably be a JSON of the suggested results. Once you select a suggestion you can just submit a request with that search parameters e.g
https://www.example.com.au/find-agent/agents/petrie-terrace-qld-4000
The URLs for the agents will the be in that HTML page, you just then need to separately send a request to each page to get the information using BeautifulSoup.
You might wanna give Node and Jquery a try. I used to use Python all the time, but it gets messy and hard to maintain after a while.

I'm trying to get some data from a webpage, but I found a problem. Whenever I want to go to the next page (i.e. page 2) to keep retrieving the data on it, I keep receiving the data from page 1. Apparently something goes wrong trying to switch to the next page.
The thing is, I haven't had problems with urls like this:
'http://www.webpage.com/index.php?page=' + str(pageno)
I can just start a while statement and I'll just jump to page 2 by adding 1 to "pageno"
My problem comes in when I try to open an url with this format:
'http://www.webpage.com/search/?show_all=1#sort_order=ASC&page=' + str(pageno)
As
urllib2.urlopen('http://www.webpage.com/search/?show_all=1#sort_order=ASC&page=4').read()
will retrieve the source code from http://www.webpage.com/search/?show_all=1
There is no other way to retrieve other pages without using the hash, as far as I'm concerned.
I guess it's just urllib2 ignoring the hash, as it is normally used to specify a starting point for a browser.
The fragment of the url after the hash (#) symbol is for client-side handling and isn't actually sent to the webserver. My guess is there is some javascript on the page that requests the correct data from the server using AJAX, and you need to figure out what URL is used for that.
If you use chrome you can watch the Network tab of the developer tools and see what URLs are requested when you click the link to go to page two in your browser.
that's because hash are not part of the url that is sent to the server, it's a fragment identifier that is used to identify elements inside the page. Some websites misused the hash fragment for JavaScript hook for identifying pages though. You'll either need to be able to execute the JavaScript on the page or you'll need to reverse engineer the JavaScript and emulate the true search request that is being made, presumably through ajax. Firebug's Net tab will be really useful for this.
I'm trying to scrape some information from a web site, but am having trouble reading the relevant pages. The pages seem to first send a basic setup, then more detailed info. My download attempts only seem to capture the basic setup. I've tried urllib and mechanize so far.
Firefox and Chrome have no trouble displaying the pages, although I can't see the parts I want when I view page source.

I'd like, for example, average maturity and average duration from the lower right of the page. The problem isn't extracting that info from the page, it's downloading the page so that I can extract the info.
The page uses JavaScript to load the data. Firefox and Chrome are only working because you have JavaScript enabled - try disabling it and you'll get a mostly empty page.
Python isn't going to be able to do this by itself - your best compromise would be to control a real browser (Internet Explorer is easiest, if you're on Windows) from Python using something like Pamie.

The reason why is because it's performing AJAX calls after it loads. You will need to account for searching out those URLs to scrape it's content as well.
As RichieHindle mentioned, your best bet on Windows is to use the WebBrowser class to create an instance of an IE rendering engine and then use that to browse the site.
The class gives you full access to the DOM tree, so you can do whatever you want with it.
