My python GUI has been working fine from VSCode for months now, but today (with no changes in the code that I can find) it has been throwing me an error in the form of:
Exception has occurred: ModuleNotFoundError
No module named '_tkinter'
This error occurs for any import that is not commented out. The GUI works as intended when ran from the terminal using "python3 filename.py",but the run/debug function in VSCode keeps throwing that same error. I'm relatively new here so I have no clue what the problem could be, any insight or things to try would be appreciated.
Press Ctrl+Shift+P and type "select interpreter", press Enter and select the python interpreter path that you want to use by default in current project.
If currently selected one does not have some libraries installed, you may see error from Pylance.
The cause of this problem may be that there are multiple python versions on your machine, and the interpreter environment you are currently using is not the same environment where you installed the third-party library.
Solution:
Use the following code to get the current interpreter path
import sys
print(sys.executable)
Copy the resulting path, and then use the following commands to install third-party libraries for the current environment (using numpy as an example)
C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\Python36\python.exe -m pip install numpy

For some reason VS Code asked me to choose the default program for running code, I missed and chose NotePad. When I would hit "run" all it would do is open Notepad. Then I changed the default app to VS Code (in Windows settings), and nothing would happen after hitting "run".
I reinstalled VS Code. Now it doesn't see the installed modules (from PyPi):
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'pandas'
The modules are installed and were seen in the past (before I accidentally changed the settings).
You need to select the correct python interpreter version and try importing pandas again. If it doesn't work then you need install pandas using python version used by your VS Code. You can do this by opening terminal in VS Code and executing the following command
python3 -m pip install pandas

One Yellow line is coming up under flask and stating Import "flask" could not be resolved from source Pylance (reportMissingModuleSource) . Also, I am able to do the work with this package also successfully. But the thing is, I am not able to use autosuggesstions for Classes and methods very well.

I have checked that flask is installed successfully.

When I did not install the module "flask" in the Python environment currently used in VSCode:
Please use the command "pip --version" to check the source of the module installation tool "pip", the module is installed at this location:
Then, we can use the command "pip show flask" to check the installation location of the module "flask": (It checks whether the installation location of the module is consistent with the Python environment displayed in the lower left corner of VSCode.)
If the "reportMissingModuleSource" message is still displayed here, please reload VS Code.

Are you using a Virtualenv? If so make sure that VSCode is using the virtualenv as your python interpreter, otherwise it will not be able to pick up the packages that you installed inside this virtualenv.
To do so, click on the Python interpreter in your bottom bar, you should get a list of possible python interpreters including your virtualenv.
I had a similar issue while trying to import flask on vscode.
I fixed it by using anaconda. Simply you install the flask module in your created environment example screenshot.
How to create a virtual env in anaconda:
1. On the left sidebar, click on environments.
2. Click create (at the bottom).
3. At the pop-up window, give your vir.env a name
and select the language version.
4. Once created, you can start installing
different modules in your environment.

For Linux Mint and for those who have installed flask, but VSCode doesn't find it:
check the Flask path: pip show flask (should be smth like
Location: /home/<username>/.local/lib/python3.8/site-packages
in VSCode click left bottom button and choose the python interpreter, in my case I changed it from python3.9 to python3.8 as we can see it in the flask path.
That's because you have not chosen your path correctly,
type:
pipenv --venv
then it will show you where your virtual env is installed. Check where the packages are installed in your env, and then type what comes to you from the shell\scripts or whatever\python, and the packages will work.
I solved my problem by using a "Global" version of Python. Maybe Pylance had not updated to work with the version of Python I was using.

I was facing same issue. I tried all solutions from stack-overflow but none worked. But after lot of searching and time waste I found my silly mistake. I had created folder named 'flask' and stored my project there. I'm beginner and going through lot of such silly mistakes. Hope it would help, if somebody commits same mistake.
I think this is a Vscode problem ,just restart the Vscode .
By the following steps, I solved this issue:
1)On the project directory create the .flaskenv file
In the .flaskenv file write the following two lines:
FLASK_ENV=development
FLASK_APP=main.py
Please pay attention that main.py is my main file after writing flask run in the Vscode terminal, additionally, you have to create an env folder or requirement file proviosly.
A few answers (Jill's, Marius's, and Roy's) mention the fact that is necessary to choose the correct Python interpreter to make Pylance function properly. I would like to add the fact that this is still necessary to do when using a Jupyter Notebook with the correct Python kernel already chosen.
It is counterintuitive to choose both Python interpreter and notebook's Python kernel to make things work. It is even more counterintuitive considering the fact that Python interpreter's button (on the left bottom of the screen, on status bar) does not necessarily appear when a Jupyter Notebook is open, but when a Python script is open. For instance, in this screenshot, we see the little line under Scikit-learn's import, indicating a problem with the import (even though the import is successful). However, the correct Python kernel, with Scikit-learn installed, is already chosen. Only opening a Python script we notice that the Python interpreter is the reason of this behavior, because a wrong one is chosen, without Scikit-learn. In some sense, one could think that the reason behind this was a problem with the Python kernel or the Conda environment (it is common to experience this kind of problem when experimenting with Jupyter Notebook and Jupyter Lab). I hope this answer may help those who are searching for solving this problem in the specific context of Jupyter Notebooks inside VS Code. They could ignore the other answers because they could think it is not the case for them.
I'm trying to debug some python code using VS code. I'm getting the following error about a module that I am sure is installed.

I installed the module using
sudo pip install SimpleITK
I know that it was installed because I was getting a similar error when I ran the code through the command line, and it was fixed by doing the above. I don't understand why VS code does not recognize that
After installing a new module via pip reloading vscode may work if vscode doesn't recognize it. To do this, make sure that the module is installed inside the virtual environment by creating and activating a virtualenv:
python3 -m venv env
source env/bin/activate
Make sure to use the correct way of installing a module with pip:
python3 -m pip install {new_module}
Replace the string "{new_module}" with your module name. After that, make sure to reload vscode by clicking Ctrl+Shift+P, and selecting Reload window.
Now vscode will know the new module and autocompletion works.
sudo pip install is most likely installing globally into a Python interpreter that is different than the one that you have selected in VS Code. Please select the Python interpreter you want to use and then install explicitly using that interpreter (if you're not using a virtual environment then use something like /path/to/python -m pip install SimpleITK, although I strongly recommend using a virtual environment and to not install packages globally).
In Mac, correctly selecting the Python Interpreter worked for me:
From within VS Code, select a Python 3 interpreter by opening the Command Palette (⇧⌘P), start typing the Python: Select Interpreter command to search, then select the command. There are a lot of proposed answers that suggest changing the launch.json or the settings.json file. However, neither of these solutions worked for me.
My situation:
Is Python environment selected? yes
Does the Terminal recognize Python environment? yes
Can I run the Python code from the activated Terminal? yes
Does the code run w/o error when I use "Start Debugging"? yes
Does the code run when I click "Run Code"? no
The only solution that worked for me is to:
Open Windows Terminal (or cmd)
Activate environment: conda activate <environment_name>
Open Visual Studio Code from Terminal: code
Then, "Run Code" (#5) works without any issues.

Faced similar issue and here is how I fixed it. Remember that there are multiple ways to run your code in VS code. And for each way you may end up with different interpreters and environments. For example:
1. Creating virtual env and installing libraries
In my case I opted into creating virtual environment and doing so outside of VS Code using command prompt:
python -m venv .plotting_test
Following that I activated it:
.plotting_test\Scripts\activate.bat
Following that I installed additional libraries:
python -m pip install matplotlib
Following that I made sure to see it was all installed ok:
python -m pip list
And I also checked where for current directory:
cd
2. Point VS Code & VS Code Code Runner to virtual environment
Opened vs code, closed previous workspaces, opened new folder, created test.py as I was starting new. Pressed ctrl + shift + p. Selected ```Python: Select Interpreter``:
Followed by + Enter interpreted path
Navigated to directory from last step from section 1. Found my virtual environment folder created in step one and pointed VS code to that version's python.exe in Scripts:
Verified I am pointed to such:
Saved as workspace so that I can create default workspace settings for this project:
In workspace settings files defined paths to my virtual environment created n step 1 for workspace interpreter & CODE RUNNER(!):

Try running pip list in VS Code to check if the module is installed, next check if your python version is correct/supports that version of SimpleITK. It may be a problem with the python interpreter that you are using for VS Code (ie. the module may be installed on a different python instance than the one your VS Code is using)
Is Python environment selected?
Does the Terminal recognize the Python environment?
Can I run the Python code from the activated Terminal?
Does the code run w/o error when I use "Start Debugging"?
if the answer to the above is "yes."
Then,
Try running the Code using the option "Run python file in terminal" (in code runner extension). And assign a new shortcut for that for future use...
How to fix module not found error in Visual Studio code?
To Solve VSCode ModuleNotFoundError: No module named X Error Make sure you are running from the package folder (not from package/module ) if you want import module. calculations to work. You can also set the PYTHONPATH environment variable to the path to the package folder.
Once you have created a virtual environment, and installed your required packages in that environment, close VS code. For Windows platform, open command prompt and navigate to the folder where your virtual env folder is created. And then launch VS code from there using the command code .
For ex: My virtual env name is .imgenv, and its inside C:\py_stuff\projects
So, I navigate to C:\py_stuff\projects and then type code .
Now, your VS code should recognize the packages !
I just ran into the same issue. I found that if I selected all text before shift enter the script would compile as a file instead of as a single line.
I had the same problem. I bet you have a shebang statement at the top of your file.
If you do.
Visual Studios settings
Under "Code-runner->Code-runner: Respect Shebang" section or just do a search for "Code-runner: Respect Shebang"
Uncheck weather to respect Shebang to run code.
Now it will run under the virtual environment and find the modules that you installed using pip! :)
I struggled with this for a very long time, and had tried almost every other answer. I wasn't using pip, so that wasn't the issue. But still VS Code wasn't finding the modules that were installed in the Selected Interpreter.
Ultimately it came down to old conflicts that existed because I switched to miniconda, and VS Code was still looking for anaconda3.
I completely wiped VS Code and its associated files (cache, preference files, etc.) from my machine (some instructions), and installed a clean version.
This now syncs as expected with miniconda.
If you have different python versions installed, be sure you install module with right one.
python -m pip install <module>

python3 -m pip install <module>
Run your environment from a directory not in the users directory. I solved my problem running my environment from C:\Code\ProjectA\
I discovered my problem by running:
IMPORT os
Mycwd = os.getcwd()
PRINT(Mycwd)
.venv/Lib/SitePackages is the default directory where Vscode looks for Modules.
This directory is automatically created on creating .venv via the command Pallete.
External modules installed via pip are placed in this directory by default.
Place self created modules inside this folder manually.
For mac users
In the terminal check which python you are using by command which python. It will give you the path of the python interpreter path. After that type cmd shift P and type Python: Select interpreter.
After that select + Enter interpreter path and paste the path which you got after running the command which python.

You are running the wrong python interpreter in your command line. According to your PyCharm settings, your packages are installed for "D:\Anaconda\python.exe" and that is the python.exe that you should be calling. But according to your console output, executed interpreter is in another path.
In PyCharm, go to "Run" > "Edit Configurations" and make sure that the "Python interpreter" configuration there is also set to the one in "D:\Anaconda".
There also seems to be an issue that may be caused by PyCharm about the project settings. If the solution above does not work try the solution explained here:

I'm running a Django project from PyCharm with the configuration set up to use the Python interpreter from a virtualenv which has a dependency on opencv. The site works fine locally when I run django-admin.py runserver, however I keep getting an "ImportError: No module named cv2" error when I try to run the project directly from the PyCharm IDE.
Has anyone else had this issue with PyCharm and opencv?
In the end I ended up having to set an environment variable directly in the Pycharm Edit Configurations -> Run/Debug Configurations -> Environment Variables panel. I added the following option after you hit the edit button: set name to PYTHONPATH and value to /usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages:$PYTHONPATH which should display in the input box after editing as PYTHONPATH=/usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages:$PYTHONPATH. Also, I made sure to log out and log back in of osx which also worked for a couple other path related issues.
I'm not quite sure if this works for you guys but it works for me. In my case, it seems to me that I installed OpenCV to work with the default Python arriving with OS X. I remember I tried to install Python 2.7.5 and Python 3 in my Mac as well, I see them when I chose my Python interpreter for Pycharm. And all of them didn't let me import module cv2. So I change to the default Python2.7.2 (/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/bin/python). Then, in File/DefaultSettings/Project Interpreter/Python Interpreter, click on the Python interpreter that's been added (Python 2.7.2), click on Paths and locate to "/usr/local/bin/python2.7/site-packages"and add it. Click the blue refresh button, apply and ok. Then it works, both with import and autocompletion.
