I'm trying to install pycups on my raspberry pi running Python 2.7.16 and pip version 18.1. I'm trying to install with the following command:
sudo pip install pycups
But it keeps failing and giving this error:
Failed building wheel for pycups
Running setup.py clean for pycups
Failed to build pycups
Any ideas what could be wrong and how I can install pycups on my Pi?
I've tried
sudo pip install -U setuptools
and
sudo apt-get install python-dev
And both say they are up-to-date
Given that Python 2 reached it's end of life in 2020/01/01, pycups 2.0 and later require Python 3.
If you already have Python 3 installed, you may run the command as
pip3 install pycups
The same applies to python, becoming python3 to disambiguate.
Note that the dependencies also change:
sudo apt install gcc python3-dev libcups2-dev

I had the same problem and i did this,
pip install --upgrade pip setuptools wheel
then install opencv again,
pip install opencv-python
this worked for me
If after
pip install --upgrade pip setuptools wheel
you still have the same error,
You can try to specify the older version of OpenCV to install.
Ex.
pip3 install opencv-python==3.4.13.47
Yes .. Finally found a work around.
Follow this https://github.com/mdegans/nano_build_opencv and build from source and finally gets installed.
PS: It may take a bit long for building, for me it took 10 Hrs :P.

please check your python specifications:

I handled it by reinstalling python3 from scratch in my MacBook:
brew reinstall python#3.9
I also reinstalled numpy and matplotlib packages experimentally.
pip3 install numpy
pip3 install matplotlib
pip3 install opencv-contrib-python
The versions:
macOS Mojave 10.14.5
Python 3.9.7
OpenCV 4.5.3
OpenCV's version is 4.5.3 by this way:
import cv2
print(cv2.__version__)
But by "pip list", it shows "opencv-contrib-python 3.4.9.31".
if you are trying to install opencv in your raspberrypi 3B, Use following steps:
sudo raspi-config
advanced -- expand filesystem
reboot your pi
Open your raspi terminal and do following stuff:
use command: sudo apt-get update
use command: sudo apt-get upgrade
check your python version and upgarde it to latest one
install pip and upgrade pip
use command: mkdir project
use command: cd project
create virtual environment
activate virtual environment

if error in installing libdhf5-dev

I ran in command prompt with admin privileges following
python -m pip install --upgrade pip
Now "pip install opencv-python" works

I have installed the python-dev and python3-dev packages. Running locate Python.h shows that it is indeed installed:

I've tried installing using both pip and pip3, and I get the same error. Every other answer to this question points to having python-dev or python3-dev or some variant installed, and I've tried all those. Any ideas what else might cause this?
This is exactly the same problem I've faced today after I upgraded from 3.6 to 3.7.
Solve this problem by installing libpython3.7-dev:
sudo apt install libpython3.7-dev / libpython3.*-dev which version you use.
then install uwsgi again :
pip install uwsgi
the output should look like:
Building wheels for collected packages: uwsgi
Running setup.py bdist_wheel for uwsgi ... done
Stored in directory: /home/user/.cache/pip/wheels/2d/0c/b0/f3ba1bbce35c3766c9dac8c3d15d5431cac57e7a8c4111c268

My python version is 3.6, I do this to solve my problem:
yum -y install python36-devel
I have been trying to install apache superset in ubuntu (both 18.04 and 16.04 -- inside virtualbox )
I am following their documentation at - https://superset.incubator.apache.org/installation.html#python-virtualenv but getting stuck.
Here are the steps I followed
Step 1
`sudo apt-get install build-essential libssl-dev libffi-dev python3.5-dev python-pip libsasl2-dev` libldap2-dev
Step 2 :
pip install virtualenv
step 3 :
virtualenv venv
. ./venv/bin/activate
step 4 :
pip install --upgrade setuptools pip
step 5 :
pip install superset
and this is the step where I am getting stuck
and for ubuntu 18.04
the error message is something like this

I am getting almost the exact same error with the only different being the error code 1 in /tmp/pip-install-_atmAP/superset/
where it is some other letters instead of _atmAP in the above error code

Could you create a virtual environment using python3.6 :-
virtualenv -p python3.6 ENV
Activate your environment
source ENV/bin/activate
Then try to install superset using below command:-
ENV/bin/pip3.6 install superset

That package has been part of the distribution for many years -- I'm the maintainer.
So just do
sudo apt-get install python-rpy2 (Python 2 on e.g. Debian stable)
sudo apt-get install python3-rpy2 (Python 3, available everywhere)
and it will bring all required dependencies in as usual.

Why can't Python.h be found?
Your install is failing because you don't have the python development headers installed. You can do this through apt on ubuntu/debian with:
sudo apt-get install python-dev
for python3 use:
sudo apt-get install python3-dev
For eventlet you might also need the libevent libraries installed so if you get an error talking about that you can install libevent with:
sudo apt-get install libevent-dev
For Fedora:
sudo yum install python-devel
sudo yum install libevent-devel
and finally:
sudo easy_install gevent
What worked for me on CentOS was:
sudo yum -y install gcc
sudo yum install python-devel
For Redhat Versions(Centos 7) Use the below command to install Python Development Package
Python 2.7
sudo yum install python-dev
Python 3.4
sudo yum install python34-devel
Python 3.6
sudo yum install python36-devel

On MacOS I had trouble installing fbprophet which requires pystan which requires gcc to compile. I would consistently get the same error: command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1
I think I fixed the problem for myself thus:
I used brew install gcc to install the newest version, which ended up being gcc-8
Then I made sure that when gcc ran it would use gcc-8 instead.
It either worked because I added alias gcc='gcc-8 in my .zshrc (same as .bashrc but for zsh), or because I ran export PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH (see comment)
Also: all my attempts were inside a virtual environment and I only succeeded by installing fbprophet globally (with pip), but still no success inside a venv
This is an old post but I just run to the same problem on AWS EC2 installing regex. This working perfectly for me
sudo yum -y install gcc
and next
sudo yum -y install gcc-c++
If it is still not working, you can try this
sudo apt-get install build-essential
in my case, it solved the problem.

On MacOS I also had problems trying to install fbprophet which had gcc as one of its dependencies.
After trying several steps as recommended by #Boris the command below from the Facebook Prophet project page worked for me in the end.
conda install -c conda-forge fbprophet
It installed all the needed dependencies for fbprophet. Make sure you have anaconda installed.

I am using MacOS catalina 10.15.4. None of the posted solutions worked for me. What worked for me is:
>> xcode-select --install

Build from source and install, this is fixed in the latest release (10.3+):

Similarly I fixed it like this (notice python34):
sudo yum install python34-devel

It works for PyCharm on Ubuntu 20.10.
If you are migrating to a more modern version of python3 e.g. python3.5 to python3.8 You may want to check/upgrade the versions of the library that are failing if you have already installed the recommended libraries to handle gcc building python3-dev + other libraries as suggested.
It depends on the package. Some versions of the packages may not be supported on later versions of python3.
