Selenium checking if tab is open - python

I'm using selenium to check if a url is open in a tab, and if it is, print found. Here's my code:

When I run this, nothing happens for several seconds, then a new Firefox window is opened, with an orange search bar. found also is not printed, even though google.com is running. When I print my tabs_list to see what is inside, I get ['about:blank'].
On further testing I discovered that it was searching for tabs in the new window. Is there any way to make it search through an existing window, instead of creating a new one?

Here's the solution, you're using url in quotes in other quotes, like:
driver.get('"http://www.google.com/"')
so that one should work perfectly:

You didn't describe what problem you had with current_window_handle so I don't understand your problem. If you got some error message so you should show it in question.
I have no problem to create (many) tabs and get IDs/handlers
driver.switch_to.new_window('tab')
tab_id = driver.current_window_handle
and later switch to this tab
driver.switch_to.window(tab_id)
driver.get('link2')
And all this works even if I create tabs in new window created with
driver.switch_to.new_window('window')

BTW: in documentation in first sentence you can see
"WebDriver does not make the distinction between windows and tabs."
Minimal working code which first creates 4 empty tabs and use driver.current_window_handle to gets ID/handler and keep on list. And later it uses this list to switch tabs and load 4 different urls.
It works even if I manually switch (or reoder) tabs in window.

why this is not opening the new tab specially in chrome webdriver-browser (selenium-python)? [duplicate]

So I am trying to open websites on new tabs inside my WebDriver. I want to do this, because opening a new WebDriver for each website takes about 3.5secs using PhantomJS, I want more speed...
I'm using a multiprocess python script, and I want to get some elements from each page, so the workflow is like this:
Open Browser
Loop throught my array
For element in array -> Open website in new tab -> do my business -> close it
But I can't find any way to achieve this.
Here's the code I'm using. It takes forever between websites, I need it to be fast... Other tools are allowed, but I don't know too many tools for scrapping website content that loads with JavaScript (divs created when some event is triggered on load etc) That's why I need Selenium... BeautifulSoup can't be used for some of my pages.

You can achieve the opening/closing of a tab by the combination of keys COMMAND + T or COMMAND + W (OSX). On other OSs you can use CONTROL + T / CONTROL + W.
In selenium you can emulate such behavior.
You will need to create one webdriver and as many tabs as the tests you need.

In order to achieve this you need to ensure that the preferences browser.link.open_newwindow and browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction are properly set. The default values in the last versions are ok, otherwise you supposedly need:

the problem is that those preferences preset to other values and are frozen at least selenium 3.4.0. When you use the profile to set them with the java binding there comes an exception and with the python binding the new values are ignored.
In Java there is a way to set those preferences without specifying a profile object when talking to geckodriver, but it seem to be not implemented yet in the python binding:

The third option did stop working for python in selenium 3.4.0.
The first two options also did seem to stop working in selenium 3.4.0. They do depend on sending CTRL key event to an element. At first glance it seem that is a problem of the CTRL key, but it is failing because of the new multiprocess feature of Firefox. It might be that this new architecture impose new ways of doing that, or maybe is a temporary implementation problem. Anyway we can disable it via:

Instead, it works as follows, suppose there is only 1 opening tab:

Using Selenium v3.x opening a website in a New Tab through Python is much easier now. We have to induce an WebDriverWait for number_of_windows_to_be(2) and then collect the window handles every time we open a new tab/window and finally iterate through the window handles and switchTo().window(newly_opened) as required. I tried for a very long time to duplicate tabs in Chrome running using action_keys and send_keys on body. The only thing that worked for me was an answer here. This is what my duplicate tabs def ended up looking like, probably not the best but it works fine for me.

It basically runs some java from inside of python, it's incredibly useful. Hope this helps somebody.
Note: I am using Ubuntu, it shouldn't make a difference but if it doesn't work for you this could be the reason.
Opening the new empty tab within same window in chrome browser is not possible up to my knowledge but you can open the new tab with web-link.
So far I surfed net and I got good working content on this question.

Moreover, driver.execute_script("window.open('');") is working but is limited by the popup blocker. I process hundreds of tabs in parallel (web scraping using scrapy). However, the popup blocker became active after opening 20 new tabs using JavaScript's window.open('') and, thus, has broke my crawler.
As work around I declared a tab as "master" which has opended the following helper.html:

This will find the element and open it in a new tab. self is just the name used for the webdriver object.

How do I wait until a webpage is loaded before opening another tab

You could take the approach as mentioned at How to wait for the page to fully load using webbrowser method? and check for a certain element in the page manually.
Another options would be to import time and call it after opening each tab time.sleep(5) which waits for 5 seconds before running the next line of code.

Selenium won't open a new URL in a new tab (Python & Chrome)

I want to open quite a few URLs in different tabs using Selenium WebDriver & Python.
I am not sure what is going wrong:

I looked up tutorials and it seems to me as though this code should do what I want. What actually happens is the browser opens, url1 opens as it should, a new tab opens as it should but url2 then loads in the original tab instead of the new one (even though the new tab appears to be the active one).
(I am using Chrome because when using Firefox I can't get it to load any URLs at all. Firefox opens but does not get the url requested. I have tried to find a solution to this but to no avail.)
Is there anything I can change in my code to get the new URL to open in the new tab?

What you can do, as a workaround, is to open a link in a new tab and then switch to a new window using the switch_to.window(). Working sample:

If you look at your browser while you're executing it will look like the new window has focus, but to the webdriver, it doesn't. Don't be fooled by the visual. Also remember to select a new window handler when you close a tab as it will set the driver.current_window_handle to

(Driver info: chromedriver=<Your chrome driver version> (<string of numbers>),platform=<Your OS>)
on .close() and it will throw that error if you try to do stuff with the driver at that stage.
you need to maximize your chrome for this

How to send shortcut keys in the current web browser?

I am trying to send some shortcut keys to open a new tab in chrome, using selenium in python. I open up facebook, then I log in, then I want to open a new tab where I can pass the url of one of my friend so that I can view his profile. I wrote the following code:

But it gives me the error:
selenium.common.exceptions.StaleElementReferenceException: Message: stale element reference: element is not attached to the page document
I made the browser wait implicitly but still it's unable to find the tag. Please help.
First of all, try calling WebDriverWait instead of find_element_by_css_selector in order to find elements. It calls find_element_by_<method> every half a second until given timeout. That way you don't have to gamble with implicitly_wait or time.sleep().
Regarding your open new tab problem - you cannot send ctrl + t to chromedriver, it simply wouldn't do anything (it would work on firefox though). I've encountered this problem before, and the best solution I found is to search for a link in the website itself, so if you're on Facebook you can use that F icon at the top left. Then you can send ctrl + shift + click to open that in a new tab.

From there you should just switch tabs using
