During the last couple days I have been trying to use environment variables in django but it just seems impossible. I made my .env file and put it in my project directory with all the variables. When I run the server it says that my secret key is not defined even though I am loading my environment variables. I do not know what I am doing wrong in this project because this approach work just fine in another one i made.
If someone can find the error I would really appreciate it a lot.

EDIT
I managed to solve all the problem by removing all the code from the dotenv part in the settings.py and just putting dotenv.load_dotenv(). I do not know why did that work but I am almost crying because of how happy I am.
In settings.py file, SECRET_KEY = os.environ.get("SECRET_KEY") must not be empty,
give another project secret key like this
SECRET_KEY = "Your secret key"

I am doing a project for college this was my first app with django I have no prior experience to this
I am trying to deploy my app to heroku, I deployed it a couple of hours back with "DISABLE_COLLECTSTATIC" config and it was working. When I tried adding the static files settings the app was not working anymore, it still deploys but I get the "Application Error" when i open the app.

I tried changing staticfiles_dirs because it seemed that the path to the staticfiles is wrong, the collectstatic command did not work, i hardcoded the staticfiles_dirs and then collectstatic worked, but heroku didn't, so i reverted the changes, I deleted the cloudinary settings at the bottom that resulted in an error so i reverted that change as well, the current output i am getting n heroku is this.
I would like to publish my website made in Django with Debug=False setting. However, this gives me error 500.
I did my best but it still doesn't work. Here is what I already tried:
I went through this question: CommandError: You must set settings.ALLOWED_HOSTS if DEBUG is False
I learnt I need to add allowed_hosts but neither localhost, *, nor the link to my website worked.
I tried to collect staticfiles. It did not help. My project is on heroku and heroku collects all staticfiles authomatically by itself.
There might be some problem with setting of whitenoise, but I am not able to run debug=False even locally.
You can find all my code here: https://github.com/eliska-n/elinit/tree/master. Here I share my settings.py file.

With the DEBUG=on in my .env file DEBUG=True, the images show both online and locally. When I switch DEBUG=off in .env the images don't show up running locally. Can someone explain to me why? Is DEBUG influencing where the files are showing from?
Edit whilst writing the post - I changed my heroku URL in allowed hosts to include https:// and now the images show. What documentation shall I look into to understand this?
Because off is treated as a string and a non empty string is still truthy
You need to remove DEBUG from the env file altogether for it to be set to false (or a falsy value such as DEBUG=0)
I am new to django, when i created a project and goes to 'url/admin'. It shows the default django admin UI. But now, when i navigate to 'url/admin'. It shows different UI of admin login than default one.
I attached the screenshot of it, how it is looking. How to make this screen to look as default one of django admin screen?
Kindly see the url too in screenshot. Why after 'url/admin' more string shown.

I'm a beginner to django and trying to figure out how to incorporate ckeditor into a blog. I'm stuck at the step of copying ckeditor static files into the static root. No matter what fix I try, when I run python manage.py collectstatic, I get the error: ImproperlyConfigured: You're using the staticfiles app without having set the STATIC_ROOT setting to a filesystem path.
I've tried numerous online guides for ckeditor, read the django documentation on static files, and searched for an answer to this issue, but have not been able to find any answer which fixes the error.
Here is my current settings.py

I have read that since I am using the django development server, the collectstatic command may not work? I wasn't completely clear on that, but in that case, how would I go about copying ckeditor static files into the static root?
I am very new to programming and django, so I don't know if I am missing something, or not understanding something properly. If anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated.
