Identify duplicated values and append a unique string to them - python

Let's say I have the following DataFrame:
df = pd.DataFrame({"my_col": ["one","two","two","one","two","one","one"]})
my_col
0 one
1 two
2 two
3 one
4 two
5 one
6 one
I would like append a string on the duplicated values with their duplicate count. Here is what I mean:
my_col
0 one_0
1 two_0
2 two_1
3 one_1
4 two_2
5 one_2
6 one_3
I know I could do something like df.groupby('my_col').apply(my_function_to_do_this) with something like this :
def my_function_to_do_this(group: pd.DataFrame) -> pd.DataFrame:
str_to_append = pd.Series(range(group.shape[0]), index=group.index).astype(str)
group["my_col"] += "_" + str_to_append
return group
but that's quite slow on a large DataFrame with a lot of small groups of like 4 rows maximum.
I'm trying to find a faster approach if any.

Use GroupBy.cumcount for counter, convert to strings and add to original with Series.str.cat:
df['my_col'] = df['my_col'].str.cat(df.groupby('my_col').cumcount().astype(str), sep='_')
print (df)
my_col
0 one_0
1 two_0
2 two_1
3 one_1
4 two_2
5 one_2
6 one_3
Or join by +:
df['my_col'] += '_' + df.groupby('my_col').cumcount().astype(str)
#longer version
#df['my_col'] = df['my_col'] + '_' + df.groupby('my_col').cumcount().astype(str)

nunique compare two Pandas dataframe with duplicates and pivot them

My input:

I trying compare two df, frame by frame, and check if label in df1 existing in same frame in df2. And make some calucation with result (pivot for example)
That my code:
m_df = df1.merge(df2,on=['frame'],how='outer' )

but this creates a some problem:
first, I can calqulate "simple" total (column All) of matched and missmatched as descipted in picture, or its "duplicated" as AO in pv_m or wrong number as in CL in pv_m_unq
and second, I think merge method as I use int not clever way, because I get if frame+label repetead in df(its happens often), in merged df I get number row in df1 X number of rows in df2 for this specific frame+label
I think maybe there is a smarter way to compare df and pivot them?
You got the unexpected result on margin total because the margin is making use the same function passed to aggfunc (i.e. pd.Series.nunique in this case) for its calculation and the values of Matched and Mismatched in these 2 rows are both the same as 1 (hence only one unique value of 1). (You are currently getting the unique count of frame id's)
Probably, you can achieve more or less what you want by taking the count on them (including margin, Matched and Mismatched) instead of the unique count of frame id's, by using pd.Series.count instead in the last line of codes:
pv_m = pd.pivot_table(m_df,columns='cross',index='label_x',values='frame', aggfunc=pd.Series.count, margins=True, fill_value=0)
Result
cross Matched Mismatched All
label_x
AO 0 1 1
CL 1 0 1
GO 1 1 2
ICV 1 1 2
PL 0 2 2
All 3 5 8

If all you need is to have the All column being the sum of Matched and Mismatched, you can do it as follows:
Change your code of generating pv_m_unq without building margin:
pv_m_unq= pd.pivot_table(m_df,
columns='cross',
index='label_x',
values='frame',
aggfunc=pd.Series.nunique,fill_value=0)
Then, we create the column All as the sum of Matched and Mismatched for each row, as follows:
pv_m_unq['All'] = pv_m_unq['Matched'] + pv_m_unq['Mismatched']
Finally, create the row All as the sum of Matched and Mismatched for each column and append it as the last row, as follows:
row_All = pd.Series({'Matched': pv_m_unq['Matched'].sum(),
'Mismatched': pv_m_unq['Mismatched'].sum(),
'All': pv_m_unq['All'].sum()},
name='All')
pv_m_unq = pv_m_unq.append(row_All)
Result:
print(pv_m_unq)

You can use isin() function like this:
df3 =df1[df1.label.isin(df2.label)]

changing index of 1 row in pandas

I have the the below df build from a pivot of a larger df. In this table 'week' is the the index (dtype = object) and I need to show week 53 as the first row instead of the last
Can someone advice please? I tried reindex and custom sorting but can't find the way

Since you can't insert the row and push others back directly, a clever trick you can use is create a new order:
# adds a new column, "new" with the original order
df['new'] = range(1, len(df) + 1)
# sets value that has index 53 with 0 on the new column
# note that this comparison requires you to match index type
# so if weeks are object, you should compare df.index == '53'
df.loc[df.index == 53, 'new'] = 0
# sorts values by the new column and drops it
df = df.sort_values("new").drop('new', axis=1)

python panda new column with order of values

I would like to make a new column with the order of the numbers in a list. I get 3,1,0,4,2,5 ( index of the lowest numbers ) but I would like to have a new column with 2,1,4,0,3,5 ( so if I look at a row i get the list and I get in what order this number comes in the total list. what am I doing wrong?
df = pd.DataFrame({'list': [4,3,6,1,5,9]})
df['order'] = df.sort_values(by='list').index
print(df)
What you're looking for is the rank:
import pandas as pd
df = pd.DataFrame({'list': [4,3,6,1,5,9]})
df['order'] = df['list'].rank().sub(1).astype(int)
Result:
list order
0 4 2
1 3 1
2 6 4
3 1 0
4 5 3
5 9 5
You can use the method parameter to control how to resolve ties.

Split Dataframe from back to front

Somebody know how to make a split from back to front,
when I make a split like
dfgeo['geo'].str.split(',',expand=True)
I have:
1,2,3,4,nan,nan,nan
but I want
nan,nan,nan,4,3,2,1

if you're looking to reverse the column order you can do this:
new_df = dfgeo['geo'].str.split(',', expand=True)
new_df[new_df.columns[::-1]]
Try this:
list(reversed(dfgeo['geo'].str.split(',',expand=True)))
Assuming your code returns a list!
Use iloc with ::-1 for swap order of columns:

Pandas Multi-Colum Boolean Indexing/Selection with Dict Generator

Lets imagine you have a DataFrame df with a large number of columns, say 50, and df does not have any indexes (i.e. index_col=None). You would like to select a subset of the columns as defined by a required_columns_list, but would like to only return those rows meeting a mutiple criteria as defined by various boolean indexes. Is there a way to consicely generate the selection statement using a dict generator?
As an example:
df = pd.DataFrame(np.random.randn(100,50),index=None,columns=["Col" + ("%03d" % (i + 1)) for i in range(50)])
# df.columns = Index[u'Col001', u'Col002', ..., u'Col050']
required_columns_list = ['Col002', 'Col012', 'Col025', 'Col032', 'Col033']
now lets imagine that I define:
boolean_index_dict = {'Col001':"MyAccount", 'Col002':"Summary", 'Col005':"Total"}
I would like to select out using a dict generator to construct the multiple boolean indices:
df.loc[GENERATOR_USING_boolean_index_dict, required_columns_list].values
The above generator boolean method would be the equivalent of:
df.loc[(df['Col001']=="MyAccount") & (df['Col002']=="Summary") & (df['Col005']=="Total"), ['Col002', 'Col012', 'Col025', 'Col032', 'Col033']].values
Hopefully, you can see that this would be really useful 'template' in operating on large DataFrames and the boolean indexing can then be defined in the boolean_index_dict. I would greatly appreciate if you could let me know if this is possible in Pandas and how to construct the GENERATOR_USING_boolean_index_dict?

p.s. If you would like to test this out, you will need to populate some of df columns with text. The definition of df using random numbers was simply given as a starter if required for testing...
Suppose this is your df:
df = pd.DataFrame(np.random.randint(0,4,(100,50)),index=None,columns=["Col" + ("%03d" % (i + 1)) for i in range(50)])
# the first five cols and rows:
df.iloc[:5,:5]

Compared to your example all columns are filled with ints of 0,1,2 or 3.
Lets define the criteria:
req = ['Col002', 'Col012', 'Col025', 'Col032', 'Col033']
filt = {'Col001': 2, 'Col002': 2, 'Col005': 2}
So we want some columns, where some others columns all contain the value 2.
You can then get the result with:
df.loc[df[filt.keys()].apply(lambda x: x.tolist() == filt.values(), axis=1), req]
In my case this is the result:
Col002 Col012 Col025 Col032 Col033
43 2 2 1 3 3
98 2 1 1 1 2
Lets check the required columns for those rows:
df[filt.keys()].iloc[[43,98]]
Col005 Col001 Col002
43 2 2 2
98 2 2 2
And some other (non-matching) rows:
df[filt.keys()].iloc[[44,99]]
Col005 Col001 Col002
44 3 0 3
99 1 0 0
