Cannot import property from __init__ - python

I've a Python program with the following structure:
sdk
-> jobs
->release
In the release folde I have a script called my_release.py. In that I'm trying to import a property called PROPERTY_1 from sdk/__init__.py. I tried adding from sdk import PROPERTY_1. When I run the script I get ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'sdk'. How do I import this?

Python looks for modules in sys.path by default. If you want to import modules from a specific path take a look at this:
Importing files from different folder

You should not be in the correct working directory. Just check it with %pwd magic command from ipython

Python: Import scrypt from subfolder to another subfolder

I am working on some python project (2.7) and I have issue with imports. When I run main.py it start scripts from tests folder etc. and save output to logs and everything works fine.
/root------------
-logs
-staticCfg
-config.py
-tests
-systemTest
-scrypt1.py
-scrypt2.py
-userTest
-uScrypt1.py
main.py
My static variables (email, name etc.) are located in config.py. I need to import config.py in scrypt1.py or scrypt2.py. I tryed adding __init__.py to tests, systemTest and staticCfg folder but I always get an error.
In my scrypt1.py:
import staticCfg as cfg
...
or
from staticCfg import *
...
I get the error:
ImportError: No module named staticCfg
The import mechanism of Python can be a bit tricky.
You can refer to the documentation for more information: Python Import Mechanism
When you use absolute imports (your import does not start with a .) as you do, the import path will start from your main script (the one you launch). In your case, it's scrypt1.py. So starting from this location, python can't find the package staticCfg.
For me, the simplest solution is to create a main script in your root directory and call scrypt1.py from there (imported using from tests.systemTet import scrypt1.py). In this case, the base package will be your root folder and you will have access to the package staticCfg from all your script files as you wanted to do.
you may add root folder to PYTHONPATH.

Can't import modules - ImportError: No module named

I've created a new app called engineapp. Inside this app, there is a folder engine which is a Scrapy project.
When I try to import model from storage app inside top.py file, it returns:
from storage.models import TopItem
ImportError: No module named storage.models
Or the similar problem, when I try to import settings of scrapy project:
from engineapp.engine.engine import settings
It returns:
from engineapp.engine.engine import settings
ImportError: No module named engineapp.engine.engine
This is when I run scrapy project from command line.
Both imports created PyCharm itself.
As you can see, I've added __init__() everywhere so python would be able to recognize those files.
Do you know what should I do to be able to import those files?
PyCharm autocomplete relies on different IDE settings. You've marked your realstate_scanner as sources root, so PyCharm can resolve imports for this. From docs:
These roots contain the actual source files and resources. PyCharm uses the source roots as the starting point for resolving imports.
If you can't import some module in python, you should check PATH/PYTHONPATH variables first to make sure python interpreter knows where to find your module.

Create and import a custom python package - import doesn't work in the root

I'm totally new to Python, and I want to create my first Python library for peronal uses.
I'm using Python 2.7.5, and running the IDLE interface.
So far, what I understood from the documentation and related questions is that:
Python goes through a list of directories listed in sys.path to find scripts and libraries
The package directory must contain a __init__.py file, which can be empty
The module I want to create should be a modulename.py file with the code inside the package directory
(Sources: http://www.johnny-lin.com/cdat_tips/tips_pylang/path.html --- https://docs.python.org/2/tutorial/modules.html)
And here is what I tried that fails:
Created a personal package directory C:\....\pythonlibs
Created a subpackage dir C:\....\pythonlibs\package
Created the __init__.py file inside both folders
Created the mymodule.py file in the packacge dir
And then in the IDLE used this code:
import sys
sys.path.append(r'C:\....\pythonlibs')
First issue:
Currently I have to do this append every time I enter the IDLE. How can I keep the directory in sys.path permanently just as there are a lot of other directories there?
Then I tried importing my package:
import pythonlibs #fails!! why?
import pythonlibs.package #fails!! why?
import package #works
The error is: ImportError: No module named pythonlibs
Second issue?
This seems to be against the documentation, why can't I import from the root pythonlibs folder?
With line
sys.path.append(r'C:\....\pythonlibs')
you are instructing interpreter to start looking for modules (libraries) in this directory. Since this directory does not contain pythonlibs folder (the parent does), it can't import it.
Similarly - because it contains the module package, it can import it.

Python gives a Import Error and i don't understand why

I'm still learning to code better in Python. Therefore I am trying to use some constructions in my programming. Things like name_conventions and structured packaging & modules.
That said I come across an issue which I cannot resolve, it seems.
The structure I chose is as follows:
Core
__init__.py
controller.py
Dashboard
Log
Plugins
Stats
__init__.py
controller.py
Plugin2
Plugin3
Etc..
main.py
In the Core controller.py i am trying to import the Stats(object) class.
I have tried several different ways. In my IDE (Pycharm) it works like a charm ;) When i try to start it via Command Line i get ImportErrors.
I have tried different approaches.
from Plugins.Stats.controller import Stats
from Plugins.Stats import controller
from Plugins.Stats import controller.Stats
from Plugins import Stats.controller
I also tried to put the Stats class into the Plugins.Stats.__init__.py and call it:
from Plugins.Stats import Stats
and I get this:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "controller.py", line 4, in <module>
from Plugins.Stats.controller import Stats
ImportError: No module named 'Plugins'
The funny thing is... When i try to do the same from main.py.
It does work. So I am really confused. Am I doing something wrong?
Also are there special design patterns to handle imports?
You should add __init__.py file also in the Plugins directory so it will look like
Plugins
__init__.py
Stats
__init__.py
controller.py
You can read more about Python modules here - check out 6.4. Packages
you also can make your module you want to import visible for everyone by adding it to the pythonpath
sys.path.append("/path/to/main_folder")
before this modules are on another namespaces
You will find more info here
First put From plugin import stats, then from stats import controller and import _init_
Incase of running from the terminal it will only try to import from the current folder. You have to manually add the path of the main folder to this file using the following code at the beging of the file
import sys
sys.path.append("../")
If you want to back 2 folders add ../../ instead of ../
You should not start a submodule of a package directly as a script. This will mess up your hierarchy most of the time. Instead call it as a module:
python -m Core.controller
You can verify the following by adding this to the top of any of your scripts:
import sys
for p in sys.path:
print(repr(p))
The reason the imports work when invoked as:
python main.py
is python will add the directory of the script to the pythonpath (In this case the empty string '')
However, when running
python Core/controller.py
it will add Core to sys.path, rendering the rest of your project unimportable
You can instead use
python -m Core.controller
which'll invoke using runpy and again put the empty string on the python path.
You can read more about invocation options of the python interpreter here: https://docs.python.org/2/using/cmdline.html You can read about runpy here: https://docs.python.org/2/library/runpy.html

Python Import Module

Recently started a new Python project.
I am resolving a import module error where I am trying to import modules from the same directory.
I was following the solutions here but my situation is slightly different and as a result my script cannot run.
My project directory is as follows:
dir-parent
->dir-child-1
->dir-child-2
->dir-child-3
->__init__.py (to let python now that I can import modules from here)
->module1
->module2
->module3
->module4
->main.py
In my main.py script I am importing these module in the same directory as follows:
from dir-parent.module1 import class1
When I run the script using this method it throws a import error saying that there is no module named dir-parent.module1 (which is wrong because it exists).
I then change the import statement to:
from module1 import class1
and this seemed to resolve the error, however, the code I am working on has been in use for over 2.5 years and it has always imported modules via this method, plus in the code it refers to the dir-parent directory.
I was just wondering if there is something I am missing or need to do to resolve this without changing these import statements and legacy code?
EDIT: I am using PyCharm and am running off PyCharm
If you want to keep the code unchanged, I think you will have to add dir-parent to PYTHONPATH. For exemple, add the following on top of your main.py :
import os, sys
parent_dir = os.path.abspath(os.path.dirname(__file__)) # get parent_dir path
sys.path.append(parent_dir)
Python's import and pathing are a pain. This is what I do for modules that have a main. I don't know if pythonic at all.
# Add the parent directory to the path
CURRENTDIR = os.path.dirname(os.path.dirname(os.path.realpath(__file__)))
if CURRENTDIR not in sys.path:
sys.path.append(CURRENTDIR)
