Is it possible to insert import statements with jedi-vim? - python

I've just started looking at the Vim jedi plugin, and it seems pretty impressive. One feature of some of the Java IDEs I've used is the ability to automatically add required imports. Can Jedi do that? For example, if I enter a line such as
arg1 = sys.argv[1]
and then invoke some Jedi command, is it possible for the plugin to automatically insert an import sys line at the top of the source file (if sys is not already being imported)?
I've looked through the Jedi help, and can't see anything like this - but it's possible I missed something. Alternatively, is there another Vim plugin that would do this? (It needs a certain level of understanding of Python syntax to get it right, which is why I looked to Jedi to be able to do it).

Currently Jedi doesn't do refactoringing. This includes import additions. There's an issue for the whole subject: https://github.com/davidhalter/jedi/issues/667.
It's not that easy to implement this command with good performance. However any help is appreciated. :)

FIY, I've defined a generic import feature that can be used on demand in lh-dev. I use it from my C&C++ suite, and from my snippet engine (mu-template).
So far I don't parse anything to add the missing import/include statements. This part would be complex as Dave said. Instead my snippets know which files need to be imported/included and import/include them if not already imported/included.
It's far from being perfect, but it's a start. mu-template provides a hook to do stuff at the start of the file after the snippet has been expanded, this is where I call lh-dev function. If other snippet engines provide similar hooks, you should be able to call lh#dev#import#add() from your snippets.

I don't want to use a third-party application such as dragonfly or NatLink (paper).
So, one way is to compile it. You can put a bunch of functions that do different things all into the same program and pass along appropriate arguments to select the function you want, and pass the parameters along. Returning the result can be tricky, though, but I usually use the Clipboard (so copy the py output to clip and read from clip in Dragon). Multi-word params need to have spaces escaped (%20) and process it inside your py.
Something like this:
ShellExecute "path\program.exe myFunc myPar1, my%20Par%202", 6 ' 6 runs minimized
Wait 1
myVar = Clipboard

When using commands in another programming language, you can sometimes add them by adding a reference in the MyCommands Editor. You can reference DLLs and other "stuff". Some references to libraries appear automatically. I've installed Python and hoped to find Python in the References, but no such luck:
There is no Python entry here that I can find. You may have better luck. If you do find something, check the box and see if you can add python commands without causing an error when saving the command.
Maybe you can browse to %localappdata%\Programs\Python\Python36\ and add some of the DLLs from there and call Python commands from there. Or try getting it to work in the way described under 1.

Navigating a big Python codebase faster

As programmers we read more than we write. I've started working at a company that uses a couple of "big" Python packages; packages or package-families that have a high KLOC. Case in point: Zope.
My problem is that I have trouble navigating this codebase fast/easily. My current strategy is
I start reading a module I need to change/understand
I hit an import which I need to know more of
I find out where the source code for that import is by placing a Python debug (pdb) statement after the imports and echoing the module, which tells me it's source file
I navigate to it, in shell or the Vim file explorer.
most of the time the module itself imports more modules and before I know it I've got 10KLOC "on my plate"
Alternatively:
I see a method/class I need to know more of
I do a search (ack-grep) for the definition of that method/class across the whole codebase (which can be a pain because the codebase is partly in ~/.buildout-eggs)
I find one or more pieces of code that define that method/class
I have to deduce which one of them is the one I need to read
This costs a lot of time, which is understandable for a big codebase. But I get the feeling that navigating a large and unknown Python codebase is a common enough problem.
So I'm looking for technical tools or strategic solutions for this problem.

I just can't imagine hardcore Python programmers using the strategies outlined above.
on Vim, I like NERDTree (a file browser) and taglist.vim (source code browser --> http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=273)
also in Vim, you can use CTRL-] to jump to a definition (:h CTRL-]):

follow the install directions and put it somewhere on your PATH
from the 'root' directory of your source code, make a tags file from the shell: "ctags -R"
(make sure you have :set noautochdir, and make sure :pwd is the root directory from step 3)
go into Vim, cursor over some function or class name, hit CTRL-]
by default, if there's multiple matches for the tag, it shows you everywhere it was imported, and where it was declared
if the tag only has one match, it immediately jumps to it
...then use Ctrl+O and Ctrl+I to move back and forth from where you were
(repeat above steps for the source code of particular libraries you use, i usually keep a separate Vim window open to study stuff)
I use ipython's ?? command
You just need to figure out how to import the things you want to look for, then add ?? to the end of the module or class or function or method name to view their source code. And the command completion helps on figuring out long names as well.

I've been all over the web trying to find a way to get VIM to have code completion similar to PyDev. It doesn't seem like it is possible!

The "omnicomplete" functionality is NOT what I am looking for. It just takes all the words in the file you are working on and uses those to try and complete what I am doing. For example if I wrote:
import numpy
a_single_array = range(100)
np.a#[then I hit cntrl+n to code complete]
It would spit out "a_single_array" as a possible completion -- but that is absurd! That is not a valid completion for "numpy.a ..."
What is the issue here? All the addon would have to do is run a dir(work you want to find) from the folder you are in and then filter the output! This cannot be that difficult! (I suppose you would also have to read the file you are currently editing and filter that as well to take note of name changes... but that's pretty much it!)
Speaking of how easy it would be... if there isn't anything already made, I was thinking of writing the script myself! Any guides on how to do THAT?
No, the omni completion functionality is EXACTLY what you are looking for.
You are using <C-n> instead of <C-x><C-o>:
type <C-n> & <C-p> to complete with words from the buffer (after and before the cursor respectively)
type <C-x><C-o> to complete method/properties names

Ctrln is insert-completion.
Ctrlx Ctrlo is omni-completion.
I remap omnicompletion to CtrlSpace:
inoremap <C-Space> <C-x><C-o>
You could also try SuperTab.
I have no idea about the various completion options for Python in Vim. But if you want to roll your own you'd be well advised to study and modify one of the existing ones, like this:

Also, if all your omnicompletion is doing is listing words in current file then you don't have it set up properly for Python-specific completion. . . . Not sure how good the specialized Python completion systems get, but they certainly does compete based on Python units external to your current file. . . .

Vim Python omni-completion failing to work on system modules

I'm noticing that even for system modules, code completion doesn't work too well.
For example, if I have a simple file that does:
import re
p = re.compile(pattern)
m = p.search(line)
If I type p., I don't get completion for methods I'd expect to see (I don't see search() for example, but I do see others, such as func_closure(), func_code()).
If I type m., I don't get any completion what so ever (I'd expect .groups(), in this case).
This doesn't seem to affect all modules.. Has any one seen this behaviour and knows how to correct it?
I'm running Vim 7.2 on WinXP, with the latest pythoncomplete.vim from vim.org (0.9), running python 2.6.2.
Completion for this kind of things is tricky, because it would need to execute the actual code to work.
For example p.search() could return None or a MatchObject, depending on the data that is passed to it.
This is why omni-completion does not work here, and probably never will. It works for things that can be statically determined, for example a module's contents.
I never got the builtin omnicomplete to work for any languages. I had the most success with pysmell (which seems to have been updated slightly more recently on github than in the official repo). I still didn't find it to be reliable enough to use consistently but I can't remember exactly why.
I've resorted to building an extensive set of snipMate snippets for my primary libraries and using the default tab completion to supplement.

Is it ever polite to put code in a python configuration file?

One of my favorite features about python is that you can write configuration files in python that are very simple to read and understand. If you put a few boundaries on yourself, you can be pretty confident that non-pythonistas will know exactly what you mean and will be perfectly capable of reconfiguring your program.
My question is, what exactly are those boundaries? My own personal heuristic was
Avoid flow control. No functions, loops, or conditionals. Those wouldn't be in a text config file and people aren't expecting to have understand them. In general, it probably shouldn't matter the order in which your statements execute.
Stick to literal assignments. Methods and functions called on objects are harder to think through. Anything implicit is going to be a mess. If there's something complicated that has to happen with your parameters, change how they're interpreted.
Language keywords and error handling are right out.
I guess I ask this because I came across a situation with my Django config file where it seems to be useful to break these rules. I happen to like it, but I feel a little guilty. Basically, my project is deployed through svn checkouts to a couple different servers that won't all be configured the same (some will share a database, some won't, for example). So, I throw a hook at the end:

Do not reinvent the wheel. Use configparser and INI files. Python files are to easy to break by someone, who doesn't know Python.
Your heuristics are good. Rules are made so that boundaries are set and only broken when it's obviously a vastly better solution than the alternate.
Still, I can't help but wonder that the site checking code should be in the parser, and an additional configuration item added that selects which option should be taken.
I don't think that in this case the alternative is so bad that breaking the rules makes sense...

I think it's a pain vs pleasure argument.
It's not wrong to put code in a Python config file because it's all valid Python, but it does mean you could confuse a user who comes in to reconfigure an app. If you're that worried about it, rope it off with comments explaining roughly what it does and that the user shouldn't edit it, rather edit the settings_overrides.py file.
As for your example, that's nigh on essential for developers to test then deploy their apps. Definitely more pleasure than pain. But you should really do this instead:

pass
And in your settings_overrides.py file:
LOCALIZED = True
... If nothing but to make it clear what that file does.. What you're doing there splits overrides into two places.
As a general practice, see the other answers on the page; it all depends. Specifically for Django, however, I see nothing fundamentally wrong with writing code in the settings.py file... after all, the settings file IS code :-)
The Django docs on settings themselves say:
A settings file is just a Python module with module-level variables.
And give the example:
assign settings dynamically using normal Python syntax. For example:
MY_SETTING = [str(i) for i in range(30)]
Settings as code is also a security risk. You import your "config", but in reality you are executing whatever code is in that file. Put config in files that you parse first and you can reject nonsensical or malicious values, even if it is more work for you. I blogged about this in December 2008.
