I know that i can just add the location and create a bash script. but I want to run a program (c or Java code). I tried using 'call' and 'execfile' but without success. please help me. I also want to print 'success' if it opens.

In a program I am writing in python I need to completely restart the program if a variable becomes true, looking for a while I found this command:

When executed it returns the error [Errno 8] Exec format error. I searched for further documentation on os.execv, but didn't find anything relevant, so my question is if anyone knows what I did wrong or knows a better way to restart a script (by restarting I mean completely re-running the script, as if it were been opened for the first time, so with all unassigned variables and no thread running).
There are multiple ways to achieve the same thing. Start by modifying the program to exit whenever the flag turns True. Then there are various options, each one with its advantages and disadvantages.
Wrap it using a bash script.
The script should handle exits and restart your program. A really basic version could be:

Start the program as a sub-process of another program.
Start by wrapping your program's code to a function. Then your __main__ could look like this:

This code is relatively basic, and it requires error handling to be implemented.
Use a process manager
There are a lot of tools available that can monitor the process, run multiple processes in parallel and automatically restart stopped processes. It's worth having a look at PM2 or similar.
IMHO the third option (process manager) looks like the safest approach. The other approaches will have edge cases and require implementation from your side to handle edge cases.
This has worked for me. Please add the shebang at the top of your code and os.execv() as shown below

I got the same "Exec Format Error", and I believe it is basically the same error you get when you simply type a python script name at the command prompt and expect it to execute. On linux it won't work because a path is required, and the execv method is basically encountering the same error.
You could add the pathname of your python compiler, and that error goes away, except that the name of your script then becomes a parameter and must be added to the argv list. To avoid that, make your script independently executable by adding "#!/usr/bin/python3" to the top of the script AND chmod 755.
This works for me:

Assuming a python script running in the background, how can I trigger a function inside the script when I launched a certain application/software on my computer (Linux).

Assume, you have to call function callemnow when an external process "abc" has started. There are multiple ways of doing it but below is a sample code which would be easy for you to understand.
Note: ps -eaf | grep will give process details. The same command you can call

Thank you in advance for the time you'll give to read this question. I am learning Python and I looked up a lot before asking here, please forgive me for the newbie question.
So I created this script in python 3 using subprocess module to search for another python script's PID, while only knowing the beginning of the script's name and terminate it nicely.
Basically I run python clocks on my LCD screen through Raspberry and I2C, and I terminate the script, clear the LCD and turn it off. This "off" script code is provided below.
The issue is that when I run it from the directory it sits in with a:
python3 off.py
It works perfectly, getting parsing and terminating the PID, then turning off the LCD display.
Ideally I want to trigger it through telegram-cli because I did it in bash and it worked nicely, I find it to be a nice feature. In python it fails.
So I tested and it appears that when I try to launch it from another directory like this:
python3 ~/code/off.py
The grep subprocess returns more than the one PID it returns normally when launched from the script residing directory. For instance (with python3 -v):
kill: failed to parse argument: '25977
26044'
The second PID number is from a sub process created by the script, I can't seem to find what it is as it terminates when the script ends but fails it initial purpose.
Any help in understanding what is happening here would be really appreciated.
I came so far, as show below, from two ugly lines of bash mixed with a call to an dummy four lines python scripts, so I really feel I am getting close to a proper way of achieving my first real python script.
I tried to decompose the script line by line in the interpreter and could not reproduce the error, everything behave as expected. I only get this double PID result when running the script from an outer location.

I found out the reason of this weird comportment. An error on my end:
I forgot I called some directories with a name including the characters string I was running grep -i against provoking the double result when running the script from outside its directory using its full path.
Turns out the script runs pretty well using subprocess.
So in the end, I renamed the scripts I wanted to terminate with disp_ rather than lcd_ and added shell=False to my subprocesses to make sure there were no risk of unwantedly sending the output to bash while the running the script.
I've got a long running python script that I want to be able to end from another python script. Ideally what I'm looking for is some way of setting a process ID to the first script and being able to see if it is running or not via that ID from the second. Additionally, I'd like to be able to terminate that long running process.
Any cool shortcuts exist to make this happen?
Also, I'm working in a Windows environment.

You could get your own PID (Process Identifier) through
import os
os.getpid()
and to kill a process in Unix
import os, signal
os.kill(5383, signal.SIGKILL)
to kill in Windows use

You can send the PID to the other programm or you could search in the process-list to find the name of the other script and kill it with the above script.

You're looking for the subprocess module.

status = sp.Popen.poll(extProc) # status should now be something other than 'None' ('1' in my testing)
subprocess.Popen starts the external python script, equivalent to typing 'python myPyScript.py' in a console or terminal.
The status from subprocess.Popen.poll(extProc) will be 'None' if the process is still running, and (for me) 1 if it has been closed from within this script. Not sure about what the status is if it has been closed another way.
This worked for me under windows 11 and PyQt5:

where app is MyFirstApp.py (the caller script, running) and MySecondApp.py (the called script)
I found this code snippet online for a python terminal emulator, I thought it looked cool so I went ahead and attempted to use it. I noticed that I'm not able to use the "cd" command, I'm stuck in the directory I ran the file in. Why is this? What's going on? And how can I modify this code to make it run like a perfect native terminal? I'm still very new to programming and have only played with the subprocess module once in my life. Please help!

When you open a new process you change the current directory for the new process and not for the calling process. You should use os.chdir instead to change the directory of your program. So you need to parse the command line and check if the command is cd and then decide not to call Popen but os.chdir instead.
