how to install six.moves.xmlrpc_client? - python

I'm copying some code snippet from openstack, but when it runs to:
import six.moves.xmlrpc_client as xmlrpclib
I got the following error:
import six.moves.xmlrpc_client as xmlrpclib
ImportError: No module named xmlrpc_client
I have install the six package. How to solve this problem?
I'm working on MacOS with python 2.7.
I tried to install but failed:

six.moves is a virtual namespace. It provides access to packages that were renamed between Python 2 and 3. As such, you shouldn't be installing anything.
By importing from six.moves.xmlrpc_client the developer doesn't have to handle the case where it is located at xmlrpclib in Python 2, and at xmlrpc.client in Python 3. Note that these are part of the standard library.
The mapping was added to six version 1.5.0; make sure you have that version or newer.
Mac comes with six version 1.4.1 pre-installed in /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/Extras/lib/python and this will interfere with any version you install in site-packages (which is listed last in the sys.path).
The best work-around is to use a virtualenv and install your own version of six into that, together with whatever else you need for this project. Create a new virtualenv for new projects.
If you absolutely have to install this at the system level, then for this specific project you'll have to remove the /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/Extras/lib/python path:

sys.path.remove('/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/Extras/lib/python')
This will remove various OS X-provided packages from your path for just that run of Python; Apple installs these for their own needs.

pip uninstall six
pip install six
should solve the issue.

Module gets imported under a syntactically false name space?

I am following along with the O'Riley Head First Python (2nd Edition) Course.
At one point you will create a webapp and deploy it to pythonanywhere (chapter5).
The webapp uses two functions, imported from a module, created earlier.
The module is called vsearch.py. I also created a readme.txt and a setup.py and used setuptools to create a source distribution file using :
python3 setup.py sdist
The code of the setup.py read as follows:

The file then gets uploaded to pythonanywhere and installed via console using:

Judging from this error I assume that "vsearch" can not be found because it was installed as "vsearch-1.0". However when I try to change this line to:
from vsearch-1.0 import search4letters
I rightfully get a synthax error since I can not adress modules this way. So what can I do about this? When creating the module in the beginning I added a version number to the setup.py file because according to the lecture it is good practice. Setuptools then automatically creates the source distribution file with the "-1.0" at the end. Also when importing it using the command shown above i automatically gets importet as "vsearch-1.0" which in turn I am unable to reference in my python code because of bad synthax.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to import this under another namespace? Is there a way to reference "vsearch-1.0" in my python code without getting a synthax error?
There are different python3 versions installed on PythonAnywhere. When you install something using python3 -m pip or pip3 you use default python3 that is probably not matching python version setting of your web app. Use python3.7 and pip3.7 or python3.6 and pip3.6 etc. for --user installations to be sure.
pip install --user (with emphasized --user) installed the package into your user directory: /home/Mohr/.local/lib/pythonX.Y/site-packages/.
To run your WSGI application you probably use a virtual environment in which the user-installed modules are not available. To use modules in the venv you have to install everything in the venv. So activate the venv in a terminal and install the module with the venv's pip:
pip install vsearch-1.0.tar.gz

nrfutil - "ImportError: No module named main" on Nixos

I'm using the tool nrfutil which is implemented in Python. To be able to use it under NixOS I was using a default.nix file, that installed nrfutil into a venv. This worked for some time very well. (The last build on the build server using Nix within an alpine container could build the software I'm working on 11 days ago successfully.) When I do exactly the same things (i.e. restarting the CI server build without changes), the build fails now complaining about pip being incorrect:

I replaced pip install nrfutil with pip help to make sure the problem is not the package I try to install itself.
I'm still using python 2.7 as the nrfutil still is not fit for Python 3.
Anyway replacing python27 with python37 did not change the error I get when trying to start pip.)
NixOS version used locally is 19.09. Nix in the CI docker container is nixos/nix:latest which is the nix package manager on Alpine Linux.
Update:
Actually it works when I replace the call to pip install nrfutil with python2.7 -m pip install nrfutil. This actually confuses me even more. python2.7 is exactly the binary that is in the shebang of pip:

Update 2:
I found out that another way to fix the problem is to edit .venv/bin/pip. This script tried the following import:
from pip._internal.main import main
Which I think is the new module path starting with pip 19.3. But I still have pip 19.2. When I change this line to:
from pip._internal import main
Running pip by typing pip is working.
The thing is I have no idea why the pip script is trying to load the new module path while NixOS still has the old version of pip.

Python pip argparse upgrade

I have been attempting to upgrade argparse on Ubuntu 16.04 to the latest version, but pip keeps saying that it is part of the standard library.
How can this package be upgraded?

Argparse is maintained as a separate package here: https://pypi.python.org/pypi/argparse
Which is where pip is going to collect it.
But
As of Python >= 2.7 and >= 3.2, the argparse module is maintained
within the Python standard library. For users who still need to
support Python < 2.7 or < 3.2, it is also provided as a separate
package....
So, you are getting the error because it is part of the standard library, but also available to install via pip if you are using a version of Python for which it isn't.
If you really need to install 1.4.0 try this: (worked for me on my Windows 2.7.11 install)
Download the gzip file, not the wheel, from the pypi downloads page
Uncompress the archive and open a terminal in the argparse-1.4.01 folder
Run python setup.py install (See the 'Install' section of first link)
And check you now have the correct version (hopefully):
>>> import argparse
>>> argparse.__version__
'1.4.0'
Note:
This still leaves the original argparse.py (in ...Python27\Lib for me) intact, and places the 1.4.0 egg in site-packages, with an easy-install.pth file which I presume ensures that this version gets used in preference to the standard library one.

No such module psutil, even though psutil is installed

I am on OS X El Capitan.
I want to import psutil for a python script, but get module psutil not found.
If I do pip install psutil I get psutil already installed.
How is this possible that I have psutil installed, but it does not find it in the script?
I am using both macports and homebrew to install several python packages. Maybe this is a problem?
Any ideas how I can get psutil to import?
I have python27 and python34 on my system. For this project I need to use python27.

I was unable to reproduce your problem in a virtualenv, below are the steps I used.
Desktop $ virtualenv -p python2.7 virtenv
Desktop $ cd virtenv
virtenv $ source bin/activate
(virtenv) $ sudo pip install psutil
(virtenv) $ python
(virtenv) > import psutil
(virtenv) > exit()
(virtenv) $ deactivate
You could try removing it and reinstalling it.
Just tried to run glances, some kind of diagnostic tool that requires psutil aswell. Unfortunatelly got an error :
PsUtil module not found. Glances cannot start.
Ran pip freeze, saw that i had it installed and i decided to remove and try to reinstall. Uninstalled (Successfully uninstalled psutil-5.0.1) and when tried again to install psutil-5.0.1 failed. Ran again pip freeze and noticed there is a minor version (psutil==2.2.1) that is served in case you remove the latest (very strange).
Anyway, run again pip uninstall psutil, removed that minor version and when i tried again to reinstall worked correctly, installing the last version.
Now everything works ok.

How to declare build-time dependencies without breaking other packages?

I ran into a problem when installing a package which depended on python-daemon. I ultimately traced it to the latest version of the package python-daemon (2.0.3) released yesterday. Testing in a virtual environment on an Ubuntu 14.04 machine and issuing the following commands:

So the install of python-daemon seemed to work but something affected pip or setuptools because other packages (celery, flask), I try to install with pip after this gives me the same traceback:

If I uninstall python-daemon with pip things again and packages that weren't installing now install fine. Has anyone else come across this or something similar with a different project? My solution was to pip install the previous version

but was wondering what might be causing such an error.
(This behaviour is corrected in python-daemon version 2.0.4 and later.)
There are two sides to this:
Setuptools assumes it is the centre of everything.
Version 2.0.3 of python-daemon doesn't take that into account.
A more detailed explanation: There is some complex code using Docutils involved in the python-daemon build process, that isn't needed after install and isn't part of the library code.
It's too complex to leave in the un-importable (and therefore not-unit-testable) setup.py, so that build code is shunted to a separate testable module, version (in the file version.py), which itself uses Docutils.
But then the setup.py has a circular dependency: How to import version, when Docutils isn't yet installed? How to use Setuptools to ensure Docutils is installed, when running setup.py to completion will need version? All the feasible solutions are ugly and confusing.
The approach taken in ‘python-daemon’ 2.0.3 is to declare Docutils required for setup, and declare a Setuptools entry point for the work that needs version. That way setup.py gets to install Docutils before any of the entry points that will use version.
But now we come to the first point, that Setuptools arrogates itself as the centre of everything. By declaring an entry point, setup.py has modified every Setuptools action thereafter, and every package will fail if it can't find the entry points. And, since most of them don't have version or the specified functions in that module, they crash Setuptools.
What is essentially a bug to be fixed, reveals a poorly-understood corner case in Setuptools. So I'm voting your question up.
There doesn't seem to be a good solution to this: having modules available for setup.py but ensuring requirements are met first. Setuptools assumes it is the only build system needed to satisfy all dependencies for everything, and when that assumption fails it's very difficult to get around.
