I am scripting a SystemC simulation demo under VLAB.
How can I display an image on the screen, as one of the things the demo does at it runs?
I tried opening a window and displaying an image using wx, but this required me to create a wxApp, which blocked the thread of my demo.

This question almost amounts to the same question that is often asked: "How can I display an image in Python?", because the VLAB interpreter is Python. However, I'm looking for a solution that doesn't require me to point VLAB at third party libraries.
One simple easy way turns out to be to call on an external app to do this.
On Windows:
import os
os.startfile("myimage.png")
On Linux (Ubuntu):
import os
os.system("xdg-open myimage.png")
This is a little "hacky" in that it is not portable, but for a demo it does the job for me.

I found a way that could be considered more portable:

webbrowser.open("/full/path/to/myimage.png")

Is it possible to just import parts of tkinter, like you can import parts of Java swing without having to import the entire library when you only need to use 4 or 5 modules. I am writing small python program with pop-up input/output window a few textboxes and buttons and only want to use grid layout manager.
I have looked through all the python and tkinter documentation and searched tutorial websites and youtube unable to find an example.

You have to have all of tkinter in memory even if you don't use it all. You can import individual pieces like you can with any other python module, but that won't make your program any smaller or more efficient. Under the hood python will import the entire module, even if it only makes part of the module visible to your code.
Arguably, the only real effect would be in making your code a bit harder to understand by deviating from best practices.
Is it possible to take screenshots of a running program (with GUI) from another python program ?
If so, what could be the steps and libraries that I could use ? (On Windows)
For example, let's say I have calc.exe running. I'd want to take screenshots of what is displayed to the user from myprogram.py.
My goal is to analyze what's displayed on the monitored program.
If it's not possible to isolate the screenshot to a running predefined program, I think I will have to take screenshots of the fullscreen but it's not very practical.
Capturing an screenshot is easy. Just install the Python Imaging Library and use the ImageGrab.grab() function to return an Image instance with the screenshot.
Capturing an specified window is a little more complicated, because you need the window coordinates. I recommend you to install the win32api modules and use a little module called winGuiAuto.py. Once you do that, you can do something like this:
hwnd = winGuiAuto.findTopWindow(title)
rect = win32gui.GetWindowPlacement(hwnd)[-1]
image = ImageGrab.grab(rect)
However, capturing the screen is the easy part. If you want to analyze the contents from screenshots, you're in for a lot of complications. This is probably the wrong approach for doing what you want and should be left as a last resort.
In most cases, it's easier to use the windows api to read the contents of a window's elements directly, but that won't work with some 3rd party GUI toolkits. That's not within the scope of your question so I'm not detailing it here, but you should read the source of the winGuiAuto.py module mentioned above for examples on how to do that, as well as checking the pywinauto library.
The ImageGrab Module, works on Windows only. The pyscreenshot module, is a better replacement for that, can be used to copy the contents of the screen to a PIL or Pillow image memory. Read more at link below.

I am trying to send a couple basic text commands to a flash program running in Firefox on Windows 7, but I am unable to get pywinauto working for me.
Right now, I have just been able to accomplish the very basic task of connecting to Firefox plugin-container by directing it to the path using the following code:

The next step seems to be something to the effect of:
app.plugin-container.Edit.TypeKeys('Text')
However, I can't reference the plugin-container window using '.plugin-container', or any combination of those words. I have tried adding a title variable to the connect_() function and I have tried everything I can think of to find out how to type the command.
The example I am basing this off of is the notepad sample:

It doesn't matter to me if I use pywinauto or Firefox. If it is any easier to do this using a different module or Internet Explorer, I'm on board for whatever accomplishes the task. I am using Python version 2.7.2 and would prefer it over any version changes.
Any help at all is appreciated. I am pretty lost in all this.
As the author of pywinauto - I think you are going to have a hard time. pywinauto only really helps with standard windows controls, and I don't think that flash controls are implemented as standard windows controls (Buttons, Edit boxes, etc).
OFf the top of my head - I would think Sikuli may be a better starting point (http://sikuli.org/).
Another option may be 'http://code.google.com/p/flash-selenium/' - I just googled for "automating flash input" - and it turned up in one of the first articles I clicked.
Thanks for trying pywinauto - I just don't think it is best suited for Flash automation.

The Tkinter Text Widget will do what you ask. the IDLE main window is implemented as one, if you want to play with an example.
You could use the termcolor library - it that what you're looking for?
On Windows things are trickier. See this SO answer - you should resort to win32console and some ctypes. The answer has some code and links to other articles.
For game programming with Python, I would always recommend PyGame.
It is not very complex and enables you to easily use input, graphics and sound.

I need a tile/sprite editor kind of like Pixen, but I couldn't find one for Windows so I thought it might be a good exercise for me to try and put one together. I use Python, so are there any libraries out there that are suited to the task of putting together a simple tile/sprite editor?
You just need a gui toolkit (gtk, qt, wx) a image library (PIL) and 500 hours of free time ...

So, the fact is that creating a complex app with a nice UI takes time - I am just expanding a little bit on the answer by THC4k.
PIL, at least PIL alone is useless for this: it does have some functions to manipulate images, but the complicate task here is creating and tunning your desired UI.
That's where the widgets toolkits come in: You would have to pick a toolkit platform that can offer you buttons, images, load and save the image files, maybe some specialzed widgets you can use to create your color swatches, etc.
both GTK+ and QT4.5 have a liberal license, are very complete and very unpythonic on their use :-(
(While you are at it, when using these libraries and toolkits our app can easily be multiplatform: you don't have to make it windows specific, it is equally easy to create an app that will run on Windows, Linux and Mac using python and either GTK+ or Qt4)
One thing I would suggest is for you to learn to proper use GIMP: it is an Image editor, and certainly it will lack a lot of tools you are needing for sprites: but you can expand it's capabilities with Python plug-ins. On the other hand GIMP does have thousands of features that you'd no longer will need to create for your stand-alone app. (think on layer support, color filters, image rotation etc...)
Check around on how to install GIMP with Python support on Windows, then spend some hours learning the app, with some book-like text around preferably so you can find the hidden features.
Ah, ok, finally:
If you want a very simple thing, just for the taste of "i did it" - you can use Pygame: You have to do all the drawing on the window, including text - but have straighter access to pixels, colors, mouse clicks and coordinates than with GTK+ or Qt, in a sense it would be a lot less of overhead for you to learn in terms of API's and internal working.
You could try PyGame but, seriously, you couldn't find a freeware graphics editor for Windows??!!
EDIT: In the past I've used Aha-Soft's IconXP for pixel work, but it costs USD 30 and doesn't offer all of the Pixen features that I guess you'll want.
