Printing a .txt File Python - python

I need some help Im trying to display the text files contents (foobar) with this code
text = open('C:\\Users\\Imran\\Desktop\\text.txt',"a")
rgb = text.write("foobar\n")
print (rgb)
text.close()
for some reason it keeps displaying a number. If anyone could help that would be awesome, thanks in advance
EDIT: I am Working with Python 3.3.

Print the contents of the file like this:
with open(filename) as f:
for line in f:
print(line)
Use with to ensure that the file handle will be closed when you are finished with it.
Append to the file like this:
with open(filename, 'a') as f:
f.write('some text')

# Open a file
fo = open("foo.txt", "r+")
str = fo.read();
print "Read String is : ", str
# Close opend file
fo.close()
More: http://www.tutorialspoint.com/python/python_files_io.htm

You are printing the number of written bytes. That won't work. Also you might need to open the file as RW.
Code:
text = open('...', "a")
text.write("foo\n")
text = open('...', "r")
print text.read()

If you want to display the contents of the file open it in read mode
f=open("PATH_TO_FILE", 'r')
And then print the contents of file using
for line in f:
print(line) # In Python3.
And yes, don't forget to close the file pointer f.close() after you finish the reading

How to make a program that replaces newlines in python file with a string [duplicate]

This question already has answers here:
Why doesn't calling a string method (such as .replace or .strip) modify (mutate) the string?

Closed 3 years ago.
I am trying to display my python file in html and therefore I would like to replace every time the file jumps to a newline with < br> but the program I've written is not working.
I've looked on here and tried changing the code around a bit I have gotten different results but not the ones I need.
with open(path, "r+") as file:
contents = file.read()
contents.replace("\n", "<br>")
print(contents)
file.close()
I want to have the file display < br> every time I have a new line but instead the code dosen't change anything to the file.
Here is an example program that works:
path = "example"
contents = ""
with open(path, "r") as file:
contents = file.read()
new_contents = contents.replace("\n", "<br>")
with open(path, "w") as file:
file.write(new_contents)
Your program doesn't work because the replace method does not modify the original string; it returns a new string.
Also, you need to write the new string to the file; python won't do it automatically.
Hope this helps :)
P.S. a with statement automatically closes the file stream.
Your code reads from the file, saves the contents to a variable and replaces the newlines. But the result is not saved anywhere. And to write the result into a file you must open the file for writing.
with open(path, "r+") as file:
contents = file.read()
contents = contents.replace("\n", "<br>")
with open(path, "w+") as file:
contents = file.write(contents)
there are some issues in this code snippet.
contents.replace("\n", "<br>") will return a new object which replaced \n with <br>, so you can use html_contents = contents.replace("\n", "<br>") and print(html_contents)
when you use with the file descriptor will close after leave the indented block.
Try this:
import re
with open(path, "r") as f:
contents = f.read()
contents = re.sub("\n", "<br>", contents)
print(contents)
Borrowed from this post:
import tempfile
def modify_file(filename):
#Create temporary file read/write
t = tempfile.NamedTemporaryFile(mode="r+")
#Open input file read-only
i = open(filename, 'r')
#Copy input file to temporary file, modifying as we go
for line in i:
t.write(line.rstrip()+"\n")
i.close() #Close input file
t.seek(0) #Rewind temporary file to beginning
o = open(filename, "w") #Reopen input file writable
#Overwriting original file with temporary file contents
for line in t:
o.write(line)
t.close() #Close temporary file, will cause it to be deleted

how to open a file using strings of other file in python?

I have 1000 files, and the name of these are "numbers", for example, 2323.csv.
I have these name in a file called 1.txt.
Now I want to open these files one by one in python, using 1.txt to open them.
How can I do this?
Why not this?
with open('1.txt', 'r') as listFile:
for line in listFile:
with open(line.rstrip(), 'r') as individualFile:
# do stuff
Roughly and very basic but understandable code (no error handling).
with open('1.txt', 'r') as f:
for line in f.readlines(): # This assumes each line has a number
with open('.'.join([line, 'csv']) as cf:
file_content = cf.readlines()
print(file_content)

Text file opening in python

Could someone give me some guidance on how you would get the contents of your text file on my python code without opening up the text file in another window?
Just point me in the right direction on how I should do it (No need for solutions)
with open(workfile, 'r') as f:
for line in f:
print line
If you don't use the context manager (the with statement) you will need to explicitly call f.close(), for example:
f = open('workfile', 'r')
line = f.readline()
print line
f.close()
file = open("your_file.txt", "r")
file.read()

How can I create files , read and write files in Python?

All the tutorials I can find follow the same format which isn't working.I don't get an error message but I don't get normal output. What I get appears to be the file description at some memory location.
# file_test
ftpr= open("file","w")
ftpr.write("This is a sample line/n")
a=open("file","r")
print a
#This is the result
<open file 'file', mode 'r' at 0x00000000029DDDB0>
>>>
Do you want to read the contents of the file? Try print a.readlines().
Ie:
with open('file', 'w') as f:
f.write("Hello, world!\nGoodbye, world!\n")
with open('file', 'r') as f:
print f.readlines() # ["Hello, world!\n", "Goodbye, world!\n"]
FYI, the with blocks, if you're unfamiliar with them, ensure that the open()-d files are close()-d.
This is not the correct way to read the file. You are printing return value from open call which is object of file type. Do like this for reading and writing.
for writing
f=open("myfile","w")
f.write("hello\n")
f.write("This is a sample line/n")
f.close()
For reading
f=open("file","r")
string = f.read()
print("string")
f.close()

how to make a .text file in terminal python3.33

I was wondering how to make a .text file so I can put words in it and then in my program open the file. I just need to know how to make a .text file!
Anyone know why my code won't open my .txt file when I try to run it?
def readWords(filename):
words = []
wordFile = open(words.txt, "r")
for line in wordFile:
line = line.upper()
words.extend(string.split(line))
wordFile.close()
return words
with open('myfile.txt', 'w') as f:
f.write('potato')
Opening a file in write mode will create it for you if it doesn't already exist:
with open("/path/to/file.txt", "w") as myfile:
# Do whatever
In the above code, myfile will be the file object.
Here is a reference on open and one on with.
