I am trying to print out values stored in a dictionary. These values were created from regular expressions.
Currently I have some optional fields but I am not sure if I am doing this correctly
(field A(field B)? field C (field D)?)?
I read a quick reference and it said that ? means 0 or 1 occurrence.
When I try to search for a field such as reputation or content-type I get None because these are optional on my regex. I might have the wrong regular expression but I am wondering why whenever I search for an optional field (...)? it prints out None

However sometimes the url has many quotation marks in it which makes things confusing. Also in some logs, there is an extra reputation data field between error and reputation. content-type also does not always appear. Sometimes everything after the url data field is missing as well. This is why I added all the optional ?. I am trying to take account of these occurrences and print None when necessary.
Let's break your regex into two pieces:

The .* in the first part is greedy. It'll match everything it can, only backtracking if absolutely necessary.
The second part is one giant optional group.
When the regex executes, the .* will match everything up to the end of the string, then backtrack as necessary until the \" can match a quotation mark. That will be the last quotation mark in the string, and it will probably not be the one you wanted it to be.
Then, the giant optional group will try to match, but since the greedy .* already ate everything the giant optional group was supposed to parse, it'll fail. Since it's optional, the regex algorithm will be fine with that.
To fix this? Well, non-greedy quantifiers might help with the immediate problem, but a better solution is probably to stop trying to use a regex to parse this. Look for existing parsers for your data format. Are you trying to pull data out of HTML or XML? I've seen a lot of recommendations for BeautifulSoup.

My project (unrelated to this question, just context) is a ML classifier, I'm trying to improve it and have found that when I stripped URLS from the text given to it, some of the URLS have been broken by spaces. For example:
https:// twitter.com/username/sta tus/ID
After I remove links that are not broken, I am left with thinks like www website com. I removed those with the following regular expression in Python:

I've put a space after every one of them because this happens after the regular strip and text processing (so only working with parts of a URL separated by spaces) and theoretically we should only pick up the remainders of a broken link... not something like

It's not perfect but it works, however I just thought that I might try to preemptively remove URLS from twitter only, since I know that the spaces that break the regular URL strip will always be in the same places, hoping this improves my classifier accuracy? This will get rid of the string of characters that occurs after a link... specifically pictures, which is a lot of my data.
Specifically, is there a way to select the entity surrounding/after:
pic.twitter.com/
or, in reference to the example I gave earlier, select the entity after the username broken by the space in status (I'm just guessing at this regex)...

Yes, what you are talking about is called Positive Lookbehind and works using (?<=...), where the ellipsis should be replaced by what you want to skip.
E.g. if you want to select whatever comes after username in https://twitter.com/username/status/ID, just use
(?<=https:\/\/twitter\.com\/username\/).*
and you will get status/ID, like you can see with this live demo.
In this case I had to escape slashes / using backslashes, as required by Regex specifications; I also used the Kleene star operator, i.e. the asterisk, to match any occurrence of . (any character), just like you did.
What a positive lookbehind combination does is specifying some mandatory text before the current position of your cursor; in other words, it puts the cursor after the expression you feed it (if the said text exists).
Of course this is not enough in your case, since username won't be a fixed string but a variable one. This might be an additional requirement, since lookbehinds do not work with variable lengths.
So you can just skip www.twitter.com/
(?<=https:\/\/twitter\.com\/).*
And then, via Python, create a substring
currentText = "username/status/ID"
result = currentText.split("/",1)[1] # returns status/ID
Test it in this demo (click "Execute"); a simple explanation of how this works is in the answer to this question (in short, you just split the string at the first slash character).
As a sidenote, blanks/spaces aren't allowed in URLs and if necessary are usually encoded as %20 or + (see e.g. this answer). In other words, every URL you got can be safely stripped of spaces before processing, so... why didn't they do it?
Newb programmer here working on my first project. I've searched this site and the python documentation, and either I'm not seeing the answer, or I'm not using the right terminology. I've read the regex and if sections, specifically, and followed links around to other parts that seemed relevant.

This is for a little reddit bot project. I want the bot to be called like ##whatever## and then be able to do things with the word(s) in between the ##'s. I've set up the above code to test if Python was reading it but I keep getting my "you still haven't figured it out..." quip.
I tried adding the REGEX \W in the middle of keyphrase, to no avail. Also weird combinations of \$\$ and quotes
So, my question, is how do I put a placeholder in keyphrase for user input?
For instance, if a ##comment## does something like ##this## ##I can grab## everything between the # symbols as separate inputs/calls.
You could use the following regex r'##(.*?)##' to capture everything inside of the key phrase you've chosen.
Sample Output:

How does it work? (1) We state the string constant head and tail for the capture group 1 between the brackets (). Great, almost there! (2) We then match any character .*? with greedy search enforced so that we capture the whole string.

Regular expressions are kind of hard to wrap your head around, because they work differently than most programming constructs. It's a language to describe patterns.

Regex101 is an online sandbox that allows you to type a regular expression and some sample strings, then see what matches (and why) in real time
The regex ##(.*)## basically means "search through the string until you find two '#' signs. Right after those, start capturing zero-or-more of any character. If you find another '#', stop capturing characters. If that '#' is followed by another one, stop looking at the string, return successfully, and hold onto the entire match (from first '#' to last '#'). Also, hold onto the captured characters in case the programmer asks you for just them.
EDIT: Props to #ospahiu for bringing up the ? lazy quantifier. A final solution, combining our approaches, would look like this:

Lambdas are cool. I prefer them for one-off things, but the code above is something I'd rather put in a module. Personal preference.
You could even make the regex substitutable, using the '##' one by default

You could even go bonkers and write a function that generates a keyphrase regex from an arbitrary "tag" pattern! I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader ;) Just remember: Several characters have special regex meanings, like '*' and '?', so if you want to match that literal character, you'd need to escape them (e.g. '\?').
If you want to grab the content between the "#", then try this:

You're not getting any of the info between the #'s in your example because you're effectively looking for '####' in whatever input you give it. Unless you happen to put 4 #'s in a row, that RE will never match.
What you want to do instead is something like
re.match('##\W+##', j)
which will look for 2 leading ##s, then any number greater than 1 alphanumeric characters (\W+), then 2 trailing ##s. From there, your strip code looks fine and you should be able to grab it.
I'm trying to do a python regular expression that looks for lines formatted as such ([edit:] without new lines; the original is all on one line):

I wish to create a capture group of the body of this XML element (so the OtherTags...) for later processing.
Now the problem lies in the first line, where Label="main-video", and I would like to not capture Label="main-audio"
My initial solution is as such:

This works, in that it filters out all other non-MediaLine elements, but doesn't account for video vs audio. So to build on it, I try simply adding
m = re.search(r'<MediaLine Label(.*?)</MediaLine>', line)
but this won't create a single match, let alone being specific enough to filter audio/video. My problem seems to come down to the space between line and Label. The two variations I can think of trying both fail:
m = re.search(r'<MediaLine L(.*?)</MediaLine>', line)
m = re.search(r'<MediaLine\sL(.*?)</MediaLine>', line)
However, the following works, without being able to distinguish audio/video:
m = re.search(r'<MediaLine\s(.*?)</MediaLine>', line)
Why is the 'L' the point of failure? Where am I going wrong? Thanks for any help.
And to add to this preemptively, my goal is an expression like this:

By default, . doesn’t match a newline, so your initial solution didn't work either. To make . match a newline, you need to use the re.DOTALL flag (aka re.S):

Notice there’s also an extra ? in the first group, so that it’s not greedy.
As another comment observes, the best thing to parse XML is an XML parser. But if your particular XML is sufficiently strict in the tags and attributes that it has, then a regular expression can get the job done. It will just be messier.
Here is the html I am trying to parse.

I am attempting to use regex to parse the data. I heard about BeautifulSoup but there are around 50 items like this on the page all using the same table parameters and none of them have ID numbers. The closest they have to unique identifiers is the data in the cell before the data I need.

Source is simply the source code of the page grabbed using urllib. There is new line in the html between the second and the serial number but I am unsure if that matters.
Pyparsing can give you a little more robust extractor for your data:

Note that pyparsing doesn't care where the extra whitespace falls, and it also handles unexpected attributes that might crop up in the defined tags, whitespace inside tags, tags in upper/lower case, etc.
In most of the cases it is better to work on html using an appropriate parser, but for some cases it is perfectly OK to use regular expressions for the job. I do not know enough about your task to judge if it is a good solution or if it is better to go with #Paul 's solution, but here I try to fix your regex:

I removed the \n, because it is difficult in my opinion (\n,\r,\r\n, ...?), instead I used the option re.S (Dotall).
But be aware, now if there is a newline, it will be in your capturing group! i.e. you should strip whitespaces afterwards from your result.
Another problem of your regex is the <TD> in your string but you search for <td>. There for is the option re.I (IgnoreCase).

So you want to unleash the power of regular expressions on an irregular language like HTML. First of all, search SO for "parse HTML with regex" to find out why that might not be such a good idea.
Then consider the following: You want to replace duplicate symbols in (probably user-entered) text. You don't want to replace them inside a URL. How can you tell what a URL is? They don't always start with http – let's say ars.userfriendly.org might be a URL that is followed by a longer path that contains duplicate symbols.
Furthermore, you'll find lots of duplicate symbols that you definitely don't want to replace (think of nested parentheses (like this)), some of them maybe inside a <script> on the page you're working on (||, && etc. come to mind.
So you might come up with something like
(?<!\b(?:ftp|http|mailto)\S+)([^\\|&/=()"'\w\s])(?:\s*\1)+
which happens to work on the source code of this very page but will surely fail in other cases (for example if URLs don't start with ftp, http or mailto). Plus, it won't work in Python since it uses variable repetition inside lookbehind.
All in all, you probably won't get around parsing your HTML with a real parser, locating the body text, applying a regex to it and writing it back.

Re-EDIT: Hm, Python chokes on the (?:\s*(?P=rpt))+ part, saying the + has nothing to repeat. Looks like a bug in Python (reproducible with (.)(\s*\1)+ whereas (.)(\s?\1)+ works)...
Re-Re-EDIT: If I replace the * with {0,100}, then the regex compiles. But now Python complains about an unmatched group. Obviously you can't reference a group in a replacement if it hasn't participated in the match. I give up... :(
