Okay, so here's the deal, folks:
I've been experimenting with Python(3.3), trying to create a python program capable of generating random names for weapons in a game and replacing their old names, which are located inside a text file. Here's my function:

As you can see, I first open my text file to find the weapon's name. After that, I try to create a new file and copy the contents from the old one, while replacing the weapon's name for (name + namesuffix). However, after calling the function, I get nothing. No file whatsoever. And even if I DO add the file to the folder manually, it does not change. At all.
Namesuffix is generated through another function early on. It is saved as a global var.
Also, my text file is huge, but the bit I'm trying to edit is:
SWEP.PrintName = "KI Stinger 9mm" //sgaardname
The expected result:
SWEP.PrintName = "KI Stinger 9mm NAMESUFFIX" //sgaardname
Where did I mess up, guys?
Something like this is more pythonic.

You don't need to do this a line a time. You can replace that entire program with this:

I am trying to make a contact book application with command-line arguments. This is the code written so far to update the new contact details of a particular contact. args.name has the name of the contact. And args.number has the new number which needs to be updated.
How can I update the entire line? When I run this, it replaces the entire file, contacts.txt, with an empty string. This functionality will also help in the delete function.

You could firstly read the data from the file, create an empty string, append each line to the newly created string conditionally, and write(replace) the newly obtained string onto the existing file.

When you open a file with "w+" python erase the file !
First you whoud write two function: One that writes data and the other read data

To begin with, you should not use - in your variable declarations as it is actually an operator and will always be treated as such. It will attempt to subtract.

The value 0.5678 needs to be 0. It will always be 4 lines below the "translate" string
The file has up to about 10,000 lines.
example text file name: 01F.pz2.
I'd also like to cycle through the folder and repeat the process for every file with the pz2 extension (up to 40).

I'm not quite sure about the logic for replacing 0.5678 in your file, therefore I use a function for that - change it to whatever you need, or explain more in details what you want. Last number in line? only floating-point number?

The comments within the code should help understanding. The main concept is the list replace_tasks that keeps record of when the next line to modify will come.
Remarks: Your code sample suggests that the data in your file are structured. It will definitely be saver to read this structure and work on it instead of search-and-replace approach on a plain text file.
