Django model class inheritance with non managed classes - python

I have a simple REST API that I would like to use Django and the DJANGO REST Framework for. To start I need to connect to 2 different remote databases and get a recordset of unique countries from each. I would then like to combine those record-sets into one model class. I would like to keep each recordset in a separate classes for use in other areas of the API.
I have tried using Model class inheritance but I have not been able to get that to work with non managed tables. This is the latest version of the Model.

Django still seems to look for a local table for CombinedCountires. I've also tried as a Proxy table without abstraction but it then looks for mcapi.content_field_country_country the field from CountryA as the table name. I'm sure there must be a way to do this in the Model with remote tables but it's obviously not a common use case.

I think a better solution for your problem will be to chain results from both models and use the final result as input list for API.

How to allow boolean True on just one model in table in Django?

I've got a model where I would like there to be able to have one set as the 'app default'.
In this model I added a field named is_app_default in order to help accommodate this.

The Layer model links to TreeLevel with an m2m. Ultimately I would like the is_app_default TreeLevel automatically added to every Layer m2m relationship - which is why there can only be one TreeLevel with is_app_default set as True.
My potential solution(s):
Users with admin may be creating new TreeLevel objects - so I need to make sure they aren't setting that Boolean in any new models. I think I can override the save() method on TreeLevel to check the DB to see if another with that boolean as True exists - if so? Don't save the 'new' one and return an error. But I think this hits the database - causing unnecessary queries potentially?
Then additionally, I would also need to override the save() method on Layer and add the 'default' TreeLevel to that many2many at that time.
Is there a good way to 'automatically' handle this with these relationships?
My ultimate goal:
Have a default TreeLevel that is automatically added to every Layer many to many relationship whenever a Layer is created.
Questions:
Would my proposed solution work?
I've tried looking into Djangos Unique Constraints, but I think those are more on a row level, as opposed to a Table level.

Selecting only active records django query

In my Django project, I have an is_active boolean column in every table of my database. Every time I or the framework accesses the database, I want only the active records to show up. What is the standard way to achieve this? Certainly I don't want to check for is_active in every queries I make.
The easiest way to do this is to create a custom model manager, like this:
class OnlyActiveManager(models.Manager):
def get_queryset(self):
return super(OnlyActiveManager, self).get_queryset().filter(is_active=True)
Then, add it to your models:
class MyModel(models.Model):
objects = models.Manager()
active = OnlyActiveManager()
Next, use it like this:
foo = MyModel.active.all()
You can also use it to replace the default manager (called objects), but then you'll have to do custom queries to get all records that are in-active.
You can write a manager class for your model, A sample model manager is given below, for more you can refer Django official website

The query should be like

How do you force only one relationship in django when multiple are possible?

I am creating a web application to manage robotics teams for our area. In the application I have a django model that looks like this:

Essentially, I want it to have a relationship with team or a relationship with member, but not both. Is there a way to enforce this?
I can only see two viable solutions. First is actually the same as #mariodev suggested in the comment which is to use Genetic foreign key. That will look something like:
# make sure to change the app name

content_type = models.ForeignKey(ContentType, limit_choices_to=ALLOWED_RELATIONSHIPS)
relation_id = models.PositiveIntegerField()
relation = generic.GenericForeignKey('content_type', 'relation_id')
What that does is it sets up a generic foreign key which will allow you to link to any other model within your project. Since it can link to any other model, to restrict it to only the models you need, I use the limit_choices_to parameter of the ForeignKey. This will solve your problem since there is only one generic foreign key hence there is no way multiple relationships will be created. The disadvantage is that you cannot easily apply joins to generic foreign keys so you will not be able to do things like:
Team.objects.filter(teamformnote_set__notes__contains='foo')
The second approach is to leave the model as it and manually go into the database backend and add a db constaint. For example in postgres:
ALTER TABLE foo ADD CONSTRAINT bar CHECK ...;
This will work however it will not be transparent to your code.
This sounds like a malformed object model under the hood...
How about an abstract class which defines all common elements and two dreived classes, one for team and one for member?
If you are running into trouble with this because you want to have both referenced in the same table, you can use Generic Relations.

Django model inheritance: Delete subclass keep superclass

When dealing whith model inheritance in django is it possible to remove a instance of model subclass, without removing the superclass itself?
Using the Django example, can you remove just the Resturaunt object and retain the Place object?
Yesterday I was looking for an answer to this question and I came up with this solution, which was enough for my problem but could be scaled up as needed.
Assuming you have a Restaurant and a Place django models, the way to delete a restaurant only without touching the row inside the Place's table is creating a "fake" Restaurant model like this:
class FakeRestaurant(models.Model):
place_ptr = models.PositiveIntegerField(db_column="place_ptr_id", primary_key=True)
serves_hot_dogs = models.BooleanField()
serves_pizza = models.BooleanField()
class Meta:
app_label = Restaurant._meta.app_label
db_table = Restaurant._meta.db_table
managed = False
Now, you can retrieve objects from that table as if it had no bound external relationship:
place = Place.objects.get(pk=1)
restaurant = Restaurant.objects.get(pk=1)
fake_restaurant = FakeRestaurant.objects.get(pk=1)
fake_restaurant.delete()
fake_restaurant and restaurant won't exist anymore, place will remain untouched.

In Django 1.9 parameter keep_parents was added to model delete() function, so to keep parents just call:
restaurant.delete(keep_parents=True)

ForeignKey to abstract class (generic relations)

I'm building a personal project with Django, to train myself (because I love Django, but I miss skills). I have the basic requirements, I know Python, I carefully read the Django book twice if not thrice.
My goal is to create a simple monitoring service, with a Django-based web interface allowing me to check status of my "nodes" (servers). Each node has multiple "services". The application checks the availability of each service for each node.
My problem is that I have no idea how to represent different types of services in my database. I thought of two "solutions" :
single service model, with a "serviceType" field, and a big mess with the fields. (I have no great experience in database modeling, but this looks... "bad" to me)
multiple service models. i like this solution, but then I have no idea how I can reference these DIFFERENT services in the same field.
This is a short excerpt from my models.py file : (I removed everything that is not related to this problem)

Of course, the line with the ManyToManyField is bogus. I have no idea what to put in place of "*Service". I honestly searched for solutions about this, I heard of "generic relations", triple-join tables, but I did'nt really understand these things.
Moreover, English is not my native language, so coming to database structure and semantics, my knowledge and understanding of what I read is limited (but that's my problem)
For a start, use Django's multi-table inheritance, rather than the abstract model you have currently.
Your code would then become:

On the database level, this will create a 'service' table, the rows of which will be linked via one to one relationships with separate tables for each child service.
The only difficulty with this approach is that when you do something like the following:
node = Node.objects.get(pk=node_id)
for service in node.services.all():
# Do something with the service
The 'service' objects you access in the loop will be of the parent type.
If you know what child type these will have beforehand, you can just access the child class in the following way:
from django.core.exceptions import ObjectDoesNotExist
try:
telnet_service = service.telnetservice
except (AttributeError, ObjectDoesNotExist):
# You chose the wrong child type!
telnet_service = None
If you don't know the child type beforehand, it gets a bit trickier. There are a few hacky/messy solutions, including a 'serviceType' field on the parent model, but a better way, as Joe J mentioned, is to use a 'subclassing queryset'. The InheritanceManager class from django-model-utils is probably the easiest to use. Read the documentation for it here, it's a really nice little bit of code.
I think one approach that you might consider is a "subclassing queryset". Basically, it allows you to query the parent model and it will return instances of the child models in the result queryset. It would let you do queries like:
models.service.objects.all()
and have it return to you results like the following:
[ <sshServiceInstance>, <telnetServiceInstance>, <telnetServiceInstance>, ...]

However, if you use this approach, you shouldn't declare your service model as abstract as you do in the example. Granted, you will be introducing an extra join, but overall I've found the subclassing queryset to work pretty well for returning a mixed set of objects in a queryset.

If you are looking for generic foreign key relations you should check the Django contenttypes framework (built into Django). The docs pretty much explain how to use it and how to work with generic relations.
An actual service can only be on one node, right? In that case when not have a field
