Installing rpm module for (non-system) Python - python

I need to support some software that is using an old Python version (2.4). So I have downloaded and compiled Python 2.4 and installed it in a virtualenv. So far, all OK and normal procedure.
But the software is trying to import an rpm module. And I cannot find a source for that module (it is not part of the standard Python library, afaict).
Typically, once the virtualenv is enabled (source env/bin/activate) I can install required software using easy_install. But easy_install rpm is failing to find anything. There is a pyrpm module, but it is not the same thing (it installs a module called "pyrpm"). And google searches are useless, as they all link to articles on how to build rpms...
If I were using the system python (on Ubuntu) I could install the python-rpm package. But that is for Python 2.7. How do I install the equivalent for Python 2.4?
[My impression is that the rpm libraries, used by many Linux systems, include a Python library, which is packaged as python-dev by the distro. But I can't see how to access that for an arbitrary python version.]

You will probably want to download the package contents, extract them, and then use
python setup.py install
From your active environment.
Of course, as it's pre compiled, you might have trouble getting the C extension to run.
I'm not familiar enough with RPM's to know whether you can get the source from there.
No guarantees the package will work with your python version though.

there's no simple way to do this; the python library is part of the system rpm package and interfaces to C code, so is closely tied to the rpm package installed on your machine.
instead, it's much simpler to install an old OS in a VM (eg CentOS 5) that uses Python 2.4. then everything is consistent and works.

After you download the wanted version read and follow the INSTALL instructions in order to compile it on your target OS. Afterwards make sure you add the correct path to the 'site-packages' folder the installation chose into your PYTHONPATH environment variable.
To test start your python interpreter and run 'import rpm'

How to package python into virtualenv?

How to package Python itself into virtualenv? Is this even possible?
I'm trying to run python on a machine which it is not installed on, and I thought virtualenv made this possible. It activates, but can't run any Python.
When setting up the virtualenv (this can also be done if it already set up) simply do:
python -m virtualenv -p python env
And Python will be added to the virtualenv, and will become the default python of it.
The version of Python can also be passed, as python uses the first version found in the PATH.
virtualenv makes it convenient to use multiple python versions in different projects on the same machine, and isolate the pip install libraries installed by each project. It doesn’t install or manage the overall python environment. Python must be installed on the machine before you can install or configure the virtualenv tool itself or switch into a virtual environment.
Side note, consider using virtualenvwrapper — great helper for virtualenv.
You haven't specified the Operating System you are using.
In case you're using Windows, you don't use virtualenv for this. Instead you:
Download the Python embeddable package
Unpack it
Uncomment import site in the python37._pth file (only if you want to add additional packages)
Manually copy your additional packages (the ones you usually install with pip) to Lib\site-packages (you need to create that directory first, of course)
Such a python installation is configured in such a way that it can be moved and run from any location.
You only have to ensure the Microsoft C Runtime is installed on the system (but it almost always already is). See the documentation note:
Note The embedded distribution does not include the Microsoft C Runtime and it is the responsibility of the application installer to provide this. The runtime may have already been installed on a user’s system previously or automatically via Windows Update, and can be detected by finding ucrtbase.dll in the system directory.
You might need to install python in some location you have the permissions to do so.

How can I install a Third-Party Package in Python Canopy?

I am currently attempting to install a third-party package (gnuradio, to be specific) into the Canopy version of Python on an Ubuntu computer. I currently have the entire package stored in my filesystem as a folder with subfolders and python files; however, I have been able to find no information as to how to make the transition into a functionally installed and recognized package. How can I do so?
You shouldn't use third party pythons on Ubuntu, unless you very exactly know what you're doing (you don't). Ubuntu keeps your python up-to-date and uses the package manager to install pack
So, setting up a recent version of python is just
sudo apt-get install python
So if you still want to integrate GNU Radio into your canopy installation, you will need to get the development headers of exactly their version of python, and specify that you want to only use them etc, and build GNU Radio from source. I do not recommend doing that.
In my opinion, you should probably rather install GNU Radio either from source against the python and libraries on your main OS rather than canopy's happy little installation folder, or use the gnuradio package that Ubuntu has.
I recommend using pybombs to install GNU Radio from source. You'll get the latest and greatest, in a safe install prefix, and easy access to bleeding edge SDR device drivers.

install natgrid in matplotlib in the environment of python 2.7

I'm quit new in using python. The current version I'm using is 2.7. I need to employ function mncontour in minuit which requires the installation of natgrid as additional toolkit for matplotlib. I downloaded natgrid 0.2.1 with a file named setup.py in it. I ran this setup.py through python shell without reaching any error. But it seems that the installation was not succeed. Anyone has any idea how the installation can be done? Many thanks.

Could you please provide some more information on this topic.
what operating system you are working with ( some offer more support than others for python)
have you installed python headers, and a C/C++ compiler in your environment? ( numerical libraries might require native code to speed up the computation)
Have you tried a package manager for python ( such as easy or pip)? Both work on both windows and unixes, and usually download and install all the needed packages to make your module working.
A piece of the setup's output before setup.py finished would help us help you greatly.
Python for Windows [Nt - 7] is compiled with either cygwin or mingw, thus you not only need the python environment, but also said compiler, and python headers. If you want a more point and click install, then there's this professor at this university who maintains a good and up to date repository of scientific python modules, that depend on native extensions ( among which numpy, scipy, matplotlib).

I am installing python 3 on snow leopard, what am I installing exactly?

I'm having difficulty installing python 3 on snow leopard.
I'm having difficulty because I have no idea what I am installing. (I do understand that python is a language, and that it uses a virtual machine)
Where can I get an overview of all the parts that make up working installation of python and how they need to be configured?
I want to understand this so that I can use python 3, but not break the other installations on my system.
There is normally no need to build Python on Mac OS X from source. If you want the most recent Python 3, download and install one of the two official Python 3.2 installers for OS X from python.org here. The Python installers from python.org install a framework build of Python 3 rooted at
/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.2
In that directory, you will find bin, lib, and other directories unique to that version. If you install another Python versions (say, 2.7) using python.org installers, it will be be installed under /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7, completely independent of the 3.2 version. There will also be a version of IDLE.app and other files installed into /Applications/Python m.n (3.2, 2.7, etc.). The Apple-supplied system Pythons (2.6.1 and 2.5.4 for OS X 10.6) are installed in:
/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/
again a completely separate location. Thus, the system Python files do not need to be and should not be altered or removed. The python.org installers have the option to alter your shell PATH variable to prepend the appropriate framework bin directory to your path so that the newly installed Python will be found first. With Python 3 there is no conflict anyway, since you need to invoke it by python3, rather than python.
The python.org installers also have the option to install symlinks from /usr/local/bin to the important files in the framework bin directory but, for various reasons, those are not particularly useful. In general, you need to include the framework bin directory in your execution PATH; with that, the /usr/local/bin symlinks are usually not needed.
If you are really interested in the details, download the source tarball and examine configure.in and the top level makefile. The script that is used to build the installer is in Mac/BuildInstaller.

It will install to python3 by default thereby not breaking your other distros.

elsewhere it's just python.

Python executable in a place that is not normally on your PATH, you may want to
set up a symlink in /usr/local/bin.

If you wish, you can create a subdirectory and invoke configure from there. For

(This will fail if you also built at the top-level directory. You should do a
"make clean" at the toplevel first.)

You are installing packages and modules. You can download the source and look through the directory. Everything installed is as it appears. This is not Windows where files are spewed everywhere on the system.

Opencv 2.2 not recognized on Python 2.7 (Ubuntu/Windows XP)

I've been trying to connect opencv and python in both Ubuntu and Windows XP. I've failed on both.
I've read many webpages and threads about "how to install" it but none has worked (the worst part is that they all say kind of the same).
Steps (windows xp):
Installed Python 2.7 by default (works perfectly)
Installed PIL and cx_Freeze (may they
create a conflict? I don't think so
:s)
Installed Opencv 2.2 by default
(OpenCV-2.2.0-win32-vs2010.exe) and
it isn't recognized inside a py nor
as import opencv.cv nor using the
cookbook way, import cv (I skipped
the visual studio steps since I'll
use it with python)
Checked path (it's ok, it has the
Opencv2.2\bin thing)
Rechecked webpages and stuff
Steps (ubuntu):
Had python working
sudo apt-get install, cmake, make,
sudo make install, etcetc (from the
tutorials)
same thing... module not recognized
Please can you help?
Update:
I managed to install it and have it recognized by the system (I used http://www.lfd.uci.edu/~gohlke/pythonlibs/#opencv and it worked perfectly after that).
The problem now is that it crashes when I try to use CaptureFromFile. Someone else has reported it 3 days ago so now I wait.
I'll check the other wrappers, maybe one of them will work.

For Ubuntu you should just need to apt-get install python-dev then generate the make files with Cmake, build it and then make install. In order to build the python bindings you need to have the python header files on your system and you probably don't. When you run configure in Cmake make sure that you don't see any messages at the top about PYTHON_INCLUDE not being defined.
To access a library it needs a Python library installed in the Python version you are using. From what you write above it seems to me that you install OpenCV in general, but that you don't specifically install the Python library. This is why it doesn't work.
I'm not sure how to install the Python wrappers, and the OpenCV documentation is a bit sparse on that info. But if you did build them (and that needs to be turned on explicitly, says the docs) they seem to end up in opencv/release/lib .
