Running Acrobat with Python - python

I'm using Adobe Acrobat Pro to extract information from PDFs in XML format. Acrobat does this particularly well. I want to extract information from about a thousand documents and do stuff with that information, so using Acrobat by hand would be annoying. Are there plugins to call Acrobat functions (i.e. save as XML) from any common language, ideally Python?

If you're on Windows, you can talk to Acrobat using DDE commands. The pyWin32 module supports DDE calls, or you could try your luck with this stand-alone binding.
But you'll have to figure out the request to send to Acrobat. (here's some random documentation, but it doesn't mention XML). It seems that the commands change from version to version, (or at least some things break), so keep an eye on the version. Good luck.

Maybe you could take a look at pypdf? It allows python reference to Adobe PDF's. Also PDFminer allows pdf xml extracting. I know perl can do it because I have previously used it myself, here is the reference to the module CAM::PDF

Is it possible to perform an OCR in certain area in a PDF with python? I am trying to build a program to extract some information from every PDF sheet like what Autodesk BIM360 do

borb is an open-source, pure Python PDF library that plays nice with other famous libraries. e.g. you can insert PIL images, or matplotlib charts, and you can use pytesseract to apply OCR to your document.
There is a large examples repository in case you want to learn more. You can find a working example of OCR there as well.

What's happening here is that the OCR process is dumping its results in an invisible layer of the PDF (these are called optional content groups). Hence the name OCRAsOptionalContentGroup.
Afterwards, you can store the Document again, and it will appear to contain text, youll be able to search it, select the text, and everything youre used to.

How do I extract text in the right order from PDF using PyPDF2?

I am currently doing a project to extract the contents of a PDF. The code runs smoothly and I am able to extract the text but the extracted text are not in the right order. The code extracts the text in a weird way. The order of the text is all over the place. It does not go from top to bottom and is really confusing.
I looked up online but there was very little help on how to order the text extraction. Most tutorials came up with the same result. For reference, this is the PDF that I am currently testing it on (page 5): https://www.pidm.gov.my/PIDM/files/13/134b5c79-5319-4199-ac68-99f62aca6047.pdf

The extracted text would always start with the footer of the page and then go its way from bottom to top. I noticed in the next page it would start from top to bottom but only for a few certain sentences. Then it would extract text from a different position of the page instead of continuing from where it left off.
All of the text does get extracted but the order of which it is extracted is all over the place. Is there any solution for this problem?
I had to deal with a problem that was similar and it turned out that the module pdfplumber worked better than PyPDF. I guess it depends on the document itself, you should try.
Otherwise another answer to your problem would be to treat the PDFs as images with the pdf2image module and extract the text within them using pytesseract. However it might not be perfect method as the pdf2image method convert_from_path can take quite a long time to run.
I drop some code down here if you are interested.
First of all make sure you install all necessary depedencies as well as Tesseract and ImageMagik. You can find any information regarding install on the website. If you are working with windows there's a good Medium article here.
To convert PDFs to images using pdf2image:

I recently started using PyMuPDF. It’s licensing is a little confusing but some of their methods have ways to correctly sort the text as it naturally appears (left to right, top to bottom). Something like page.get_text(“words”, sort=True) is all it takes.

How extract text from this compressed PDF/A?

For machine learning purposes (sckit-learn), I need to extract the raw text from lots of PDF files. First off, I was using xpdf pdftotext to do this task:

So, Is there any way to extract pure text from a PDF like that using Python or a third party app?
If you want to decompress the streams in a PDF file, I can recommend using qdpf, but on this file
qpdf --decrypt --stream-data=uncompress document.pdf out.pdf
doesn't help either.
I am not sure though why your efforts with xpdf and tesseract did not work out, using image-magick's convert

If you are on Windows, make sure your PDF file is not open in a different process (like a PDF viewer), as Windows doesn't seem to like that.
The final print is limited as the full output is quite large.
This converting and OCR-ing takes a while so you might want to uncomment the print in call() to get some sense of progress.
There are two fairly simple techniques you can use.
1) Google's "Tessaract" open source OCR (optical character recognition). You could apply this evenly to all PDFs, though converting all that data into pixels and then working magic upon them is going to be more computationally expensive. Which is more important, engineer time or CPU time? There's a pytesseract module. Note that this tool works on image formats, so you'd have to use something like GhostScript (another open source project) to convert all of a PDF's pages to images, then run [py]tessaract on those images.
2) pyPDF can get each page and programmatically extract any text draw operations in the order they were drawn onto the page. This may be nothing like the logical reading order of the page... While a PDF could draw all the 'a's and then all the 'b's (and so forth), it's actually more efficient to draw everything in "font a" , then everything in "font b". It's important to note that "font b" might just be the italic version of "font a". This produces a shorter/more efficient stream of drawing commands, though probably not by such an amount as to be a good business decision to do so.
The kicker here is that a random pile of PDF files might require you to do some OCR. A poorly assembled PDF (one with a font subset that has no "to unicode" data) can't be properly mined for text even though it has nothing but text drawing operations. "Draw glyphs one through five from "font C" doesn't mean much if you don't know that those first five glyphs are "g-l-y-p-h", because that's the order they were used in.
On the other hand, if you've got home-grown PDFs or all your pdfs are from some known source (Word's pdf converter for example), you'll know what to expect in advance.
Note that the only thing mentioned above that I've actually used is Ghostscript. I remember it having a solid command line interface we used to generate images for some online PDF viewer Many Years Ago.

Python + PyPdf: Crop region of page and paste it in another page

Lets say you have a pdf page with various complex elements inside.
The objective is to crop a region of the page (to extract only one of the elements) and then paste it in another pdf page.
Here is a simplified version of my code:

The method "extract_tree" seems to be working. It generates a pdf file containing only the cropped region (in the example, the tree).
The problem in that when I try to paste the tree in the new page, the star and the house of the original image are pasted anyway
I tried something that actually worked. Try to convert your first output(pdf containing only the tree) to docx then convert it another time from docx to pdf before merging it with other pdf pages. It will work(only the tree will be merged).

I had the exact same issue. In the end, the solution for me was to make a small edit to the source code of pyPDF2 (from this pull request, which never made it into the master branch). What you need to do is insert these lines into the method _mergePage of the class PageObject inside the file pdf.py:

Create a pdf with fillable fields python

So I have been tasked with creating a pdf that allows the end user to enter information into the pdf and print it or save it, either or. The pdf I am trying to create is being rendered from a pdf template that has fillable fields. The problem I have is that every time I use any python library(pypdf2, pdfrw, reportlabs, etc...) to create this pdf, it flattens it and the fields are no longer fillable after export. Is there anything out there that will accomplish this goal? It doesn't really matter to me if I have to take the flat template file and render an html form onto it, so long as it works. The pdf was made in acrobat and I made sure to remove the password.
The pdf in question was created in acrobat pro. My python version is 2.7.
If anyone has done this before, that information would be super helpful. Thanks!
Facing the same problem. Just found out, the forms in the output.pdf are not fillable in okular or firefox, but still able to fill when opened in google-chrome or chromium-browser.
