I am new to Django and Appengine. I found that Django 1.2 version is supported by Google Appengine. Does it mean that Django 1.2 comes with the installation of Google Appengine SDK?
Or should we install djangoappengine
Any pointers, experiences and tutorials on running Django on Appengine is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
I think djangoappengine would be a good start. It seems like an active project. Please also note that Google offers SQL backend as of October 2011 so whether you need SQL or NoSQL, you should be able to use Django for it.
General note: If you are new to both Django and GAE, you probably should start with learning Django on your local computer running a development server that comes with it. Once you get familiar with how Django works in general you can dig into GAE etc.
You can try django-nonrel, we use it professionally and it works well on App Engine.
You may just want to start with this tutorial as it is the official and recommended way for Django project on app engine.
Note that previously there some hacks and patches, but at the moment those are deprecated and above tutorial should be just enough to get you started.

I am developing a Django app to run on every client computer separately. The question is, which technologies should I use to distribute such as docker, virtual machine etc.? How can I protect the Django app's code? How can I prevent to distribute without licenses?
I suggest you look into Heroku. They have a free plan too so you can test it without having to pay first. Their guide with django after you set up an app is good too. You will find everything in their documentation but if you get stuck, I recommend this video by Corey Schafer. Good luck
Edit: Heroku also supports Docker but I'm not too familiar with it. Might be useful to you
I may be late to the party, but I've been playing around with Google App Engine.
My plan was to convert an existing open-source Django app to run on GAE.
I went through the O'reilly book, Programming Google App Engine to get the gist of GAE.
I'm ready to start diving in, but I'm curious as to the best way to approach it.
I Django-nonrel currently the best option to use?
My Google-fu isn't really turning up many examples of people converting a Django app to run on GAE. The few that I have found seem to date to 2010 or earlier. Is this because people are not finding it worthwhile to use GAE with Django?
What has been your experience porting Django apps to GAE?
Google App Engine now supports SQL databases so you can have a regular django app on GAE. Here is the official documentation, and here is a nice tutorial from another related question.
I have personally run django sql (and nonrel) apps on gae and they have been fine.
I dont know if at all i make any sense, but this popped up in my mind. Can we use the 2gb free hosting of dropbox to put our django app over there and do some hacks to run our app?
No, it's not possible.
If you want to use dropbox as the hosting, you can put static pages, meaning just the html files with CSS and javascript because those files can be retrieved by doing a simple GET request.
Hosting a python code is not possible as it requires server side calculations & dropbox is just for saving files.
See the official wiki for the available hosts. https://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/DjangoFriendlyWebHosts
The point you need to understand is: can you run django without djagno installed? Can django be installed on a usb-drive? Dropbox is but a cloud storage service NOT cloud hosting service. To store you do not require RAM and processors while for hosting you do.
Hence the answer is NO. If you are okay with configuring apache etc. you can go for VPS. If not try some managed servers. If you dont want to spend much and are looking at free hosting solutions for django a few of them are:

Yes its possible! PythonAnywhere.com offers that!
What pythonanywhere does is pretty simple. They integrate your dropbox account with their one. When you want to create a Django app, all you got to do is, direct the platform to store the app in your dropbox folder!
Now, you can open your Django app in your PC and edit it (wait for some time to sync)..restart the app, it works! I practically tried.
Tip: There are many cloud platforms which offer great services for free. Openshift, Heroku, Google App Engine are to name a few!
No, you can't use DropBox to serve a Django Website, as doing so requires Python code to be run, when DropBox is only for saving & serving files.
You can, however, find free hosting for your Django needs, among which:
Heroku, originally meant for Ruby hosting, but now allows you to do Python hosting. I didn't find it particularly easy to use with Django though.
ep.io, Python-specific hosting, but invite-only for the moment - it's possible to get an invite by sending an email, explaining your project & your needs though. Offers you free SSL on *.ep.io, which is pretty nice, and they've got great service.
Dotcloud, not platform specific, but my personal favorite. It's pretty easy to get started, and the CLI allows you to do a lot (but the downside is that you need it a lot too). If you're not afraid of CLI, it's great.
Being said its not possible from dropbox to do that you can use very simple cloud hosting as told ahead,
I might be late for answer but you can get free cloud hosting from Linux Fedora company called RedHat. Their cloud product is available for free which supports django hosting. I tried it my own
Openshift Free Cloud Hosting
In addition to what Thomas posted, some other options for free django hosting:
Amazon Compute Instance (free for one year, free sign up).
Google App Engine (free limits, django howto).
OpenShift (django howto).
As an experienced PHP programmer I tend to avoid things like Python. However we all must play with the cards we have been dealt with and I now have to work with a Satchmo website.
I have very little python, django and satchmo so I need some help. I'm ok with setting up a development server but I cannot get my website to work on a production server.
I've seen the use of "python manage.py runserver", this solution is even on Stack Overflow. However, when I see this solution there is usually someone saying "I hope you're not using that on production" so I assume this is a very incorrect way to do it. To my frustration the people that seem to know that this command line is insecure, also have no desire to share with the rest of us, just how excatly does one initiate their Satchmo Production server?
Many thanks.
To deploy a Django website on a production server, you have to serve it either with Apache+mod_wsgi, nginx+gunicorn, nginx+uwsgi, or any other server supporting WSGI. The Django documentation has a page on deploying Django on Apache with mod_wsgi, for the other solutions, there are plenty of useful documentation around the web.
runserver is just for development/testing. It won't handle high load, security, etc.
Python.org has docs on how to set up a proper webserver to serve Python code:
http://docs.python.org/howto/webservers.html
Satchmo seems like a django derivative. Setting up django on production is quite easy if your deployment environment is linux with apache then use mod_wsgi which is well documented here if its windows then you can use the pyisapie module and follow the documentation here
Hope that helps
I'm looking to write a small web app to utilise a dataset I already have stored in a MongoDB collection. I've been writing more Python than other languages lately and would like to broaden my repertoire and write a Python web app.
It seems however that most if not all of the current popular Python web development frameworks favour MySQL and others with no mention given to MongoDB.
I am aware that there are more than likely plugins written to allow Mongo be used with existing frameworks but so far have found little as to documentation that compares and contrasts them.
I was wondering what in people's experience is the Python web development framework with the best MongoDB support?
Many thanks in advance,
Patrick
I have not tried MongoKit although it has been around for a while and retains a good reputation. I personally prefer MongoEngine and feel very comfortable with it (maybe because I like its nice homepage and good documentation). There is also a very good opensource project named Mumblr which demonstrates a Django-MongoEngine-MongoDB combination, which I think a very good starter for any project. I'm developing a CMS for my own company using this app.
I've used MongoKit with Pylons before and it worked out good.
You might want to refer to this post though: MongoDB ORM for Python?
There is no stable support for mongodb using django framework. I tried using mongoengine, but unlike models, provided for admin in django framework, there is no support for mongoengine.
Correct if I am wrong.
Flask is the best framework to use with MongoDB. It has a mongodb library called flask-pymongo
Make sure you run the following commands before starting your project.
$ pip3 install Flask
$ pip3 install Flask-PyMongo
