Run executable from script with conditions python2.6 - python

I am looking for a way to execute ABAQUS (a program) automatically from a python script with certain conditions. In Linux's command (terminal) line I type in
abq683 cae script=XX.py
and it will have ABAQUS run the script. I am aware of the python module 'subprocess' and it can run the basic program, which is the 'abq683' part of the command, however I cannot seem to find a way to have the other conditions run with it.
I am wondering if there is a way to run the full abq683 cae script=XX.py command automatically from a python text file.
Perhaps there is a way to print characters to the terminal window's active line and run them?
I am using Python2.6 on a linux machine

why the same powershell command run on the powershell console but not using os.system?

I would like to include a command to create a 7zip archive withinin a Python script. Since I am working on Windows, I need to pass the command to the powershell console. I am planning to do it with os.system (I am aware that this is not the best way to do it and that I should use subprocess, but I really just need a quick fix and it would not be time effective for me to learn to use a new module in this context).
The following command works if run from the powershell console
&'C:\\Program Files\\7-Zip\\7z' a -mx=0 X:/myarch.zip X:/myarch
So I recreate the same string within python like this:
cmdl = r"&'C:\\Program Files\\7-Zip\\7z' a -mx=0 X:/myarch.zip X:/myarch"
The string is interpreted as follow:
"&'C:\\\\Program Files\\\\7-Zip\\\\7z' a -mx=0 X:/myarch.zip X:/myarch"
Now, if I copy-paste the above string within the powershell console, it runs without problems. However, if I run it within python using os.system(cmdl) I got the following error
"The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect"
Why is this the case and how can I fix this issue ?
os.system is meant for executing cmd commands, cmd commands can be ran in powershell maybe after all powershell is a bit advanced but I'm sure that you can't run a cmd command in powershell, henceforth your code is not working.
However a creative solution for executing a powershell command from python(not using python) would be to write your command into a .ps file(powershell script)and then run it using os.startfile()(use this code: os.startfile("script.ps"))

Executing command line program (Abaqus-python script) from python script

I am trying to run an Abaqus-python script file from another python script executed in Spyder (python 3.7, windows 10).
If I run the following command in CMD
abaqus cae -noGUI model.py
the code executes as expected. However, if I try to run cp = subprocess.run('abaqus cae -noGUI model.py',shell=True)
I don't get any output. Below is what is returned in cp.
Notes:
The Abaqus-python file I am trying to run is in the same folder as the python script I have.
I have tried various sp.call, sp.run, os.systems in different string and list formats.
"C:\Abaqus\Commands" and "C:\SIMULIA\Commands" are both in my PATH environment variable.
I think the -noGUI call is important to the problem. I can't seem to find others on SO with this issue.
After a fair amount of digging, I think the issue is that the PATH for my python install is done thought Anaconda so I have a different path this vs CMD. I fixed this by adding the full Abaqus location to the command. See below.
subprocess.call(r'C:\SIMULIA\Commands\abaqus job=Job-1 ask_delete=OFF interactive', shell=True)
I am not sure what your problem is due to, but note that Abaqus scripting is based on python 2.7, therefore you might need to downgrade it

Cannot run MATLAB from bash script under Windows/MSYS2

I need to run a MATLAB script from a Python script. I don't care about the output of it nor do I need to give it any arguments.
However, MATLAB R2016B's "engine" does not support Python 3.7 (Upgrading Matlab or down-grading python is not an option at this time)
So, I decided to make a shell script that runs it:
#!matlab -nodisplay -nodesktop -r 'try; myMatlabScript; catch; end; quit'
Now I need to run a bash script from Python. To do so, I did:
import subprocess
subprocess.call("./mybashscript.sh")
(And yes, the python script is at the same level as the shell script)
The python script does not complain directly. However, I do get the following:
'.' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
Which to me means that since Windows doesn't directly have bash, it doesn't know what to do with this shell script. I am not sure how to handle this. Some way to tell Python to use MSYS instead of Windows for the shell?
And thus the MATLAB script does not appear to run at all.
When I attempt under Linux (just for testing, I can't run it here for performance reasons), I get:
./mybashscript.sh: matlab: bad interpreter: No such file or directory
Is it possible this is because I didn't do the command addpath(genpath('.'))? If so, I'm not sure how I would do that in the shell script, and some help would be appreciated.
Or some other better solution would also be great.
1: Needed to re-name mybashscript.sh to mybashscript.bat
2: Needed to change the sub-process call to subprocess.call("mybashscript.bat") (as ./ was confusing the windows shell)
3: Needed to add the path properly. Here is what the batch script looked like:
matlab -nodisplay -nodesktop -r "addpath(genpath('C:/path/to/myscript')); myMatlabScript"
The double quotes are neccesary so the single quotes inside genpath do not cause it to end early.
And that was it!
EDIT: You can add -wait in the batch file to get the script to wait until it is complete before handing back to the Python script.

How to send value from python script to console and exit

My python script generate a proper command that user need to run in the same console. My scenario is that user is running a script and then as a result see the command that must to run. Is there any way to exit python script and send that command to console, so user do not need to copy/paste?
A solution would be to have your python script (let's call it script.py) just print the command: print('ls -l') and use it in a terminal like so: $(python3 script.py). This makes bash run the output of your script as a command, and would basically run a ls -l in the terminal.
You can even go a step beyond and create an alias in ~/.bashrc so that you no longer need to call the whole line. You can write at the end of the file something like alias printls=$(python3 /path/to/script.py). After starting a new terminal, you can type printls and the script will run.
A drawback of this method is that you have no proper way of handling exceptions or errors in your code, since everything it prints will be run as a command. One way (though ugly) would be to print('echo "An error occured!"') so that the user who runs the command can see that something malfunctioned.
However, I'd suggest going for the "traditional" way and running the command directly from python. Here's a link to how you can achieve this: Calling an external command in Python.
Python can run system commands in new subshells. The proper way of doing this is via the subprocess module, but for simple tasks it's easier to just use os.system. Example Python script (assuming a Unix-like system):

Can we know if a Python script is launched from Windows or a textual terminal?

I use the Windows version of Python. I have a Python script using Pyside (nothing complicated, a kind of "hello world").
When I click on my script file or if I launch it from a command line, it executes perfectly and I have a GUI appearing.
However, I would like to avoid having a GUI if the script is launched from a textual terminal (cmd.exe, cygwin, ...). A kind of script which automatically knows if it should have a GUI output or a textual output.
Is there an easy and simple way to do that? I want to be able to do that with the Windows version of Python (not the one coming with Cygwin packages).
An obvious way would be to add a kind of "--no-gui" parameter when I launch the script from a textual terminal, but I wonder if Python (or some Python libraries) already provide tools for that.
Moreover I have an SSH server (Cygwin-base) on this computer, I can execute the script at distance but no GUI appear (of course) and I have no error message. It is a case where it is very interesting to know if the script failed because of the lack of Windows graphical support or if the script should adapt its output for a textual terminal.
I know that you can run file as .py file or as .pyw file. The second option is used for GUI applications and it does not open the console window. To distinguish these to two cases you can check isatty method of sys.stdout.

I tried to run that with putty+ssh on linux box - it returns True.
I tried to use msys bash shell on windows box - it returns True (.py file)
I tried to use cygwin bash shell with cygwin python - it returns True (.py file)
Unfortunately, I have no possibility to try putty + windows cygwin ssh server.
