I've got a python program that is using a ridiculous amount of extensions, so I'm trying to set up a virtualenv for it. However, one of the libraries it uses is PIL. After installing it, I get an import error on PIL.
This problem has been identified at the link below, but the solution there does not work for me (possibly because I'm using windows? I don't know.)
The problem with installing PIL using virtualenv or buildout
I used easy_install on the repackaged package in a fresh virtualenv, with no luck. Does anybody have ideas what might be causing this, or where to look to diagnose the problem?
The issue was whether I was importing PIL.Image or simply Image. The virtualenv used Image, whereas my Python installation used PIL.image.

I cannot get autocomplete working for OpenCV (Python) on Windows.
According to Abid's instructions here, I pasted the cv2.pyd file in the C:\Python27\Lib\site-packages.
In the Python code, I import as follows:
import cv2.cv as cv
I have also installed numpy, and it created its own folder in site-packages unlike OpenCV (which I've pasted directly into site-packages).
With this setup, the code executes without any problems, even when OpenCV methods are called.
But I have not been able to get autocomplete to work. I have tried to get it to work on Sublime Text 2 (with SublimeCodeIntel) and PyCharm. In both IDEs, autocomplete works for the numpy import, but fails for the OpenCV import.
I'm using OpenCV 2.4.6, and Python 2.7 (32 bit).
Any possible solutions?
The reason it's not working is because you're using a .pyd file, which is essentially the same as a compiled .dll. Autocomplete works by reading the source .py files, which are plain text. Try installing the OpenCV and Intel Math Kernel Library optimized NumPy packages from Christoph Gohlke's Python Extension Packages for Windows repository, which is frequently updated and a must-use resource for anyone who does any kind of scientific Python computing on Windows. Make sure you delete the cv2.pyd and numpy directories from site-packages first. These new packages will install the .py source files needed by the autocomplete engine in Sublime Text.

OK, so I wrote the above because it worked well for a bunch of other packages. I'm a Python 3 guy, and I never installed OpenCV from Gohlke because it only has Python 2 bindings. After reading #CrazyCoder's comment below, I booted up Win7, and indeed he's absolutely correct (and I should have realized this before) - since OpenCV is written in C/C++, the only .py file included in the Gohlke package is cv.py, whose entire contents are as follows:
from cv2.cv import *
The rest is contained in cv2.pyd and a bunch of .dlls. The full OpenCV Windows distribution from opencv.org is a 291 MB download, which expands to 3 GB, and the few .py files in there are involved in building OpenCV, and aren't any good for autocomplete purposes. So, unfortunately, I don't know if there's a solution to your problem at the moment. Just keep the docs handy, and perhaps check out OpenCV Computer Vision with Python from Packt/O'Reilly, published in April 2013.
I've had the same issue with PyCharm when building a custom version of OpenCV on windows. Here is what I did to fix it:
OpenCV made a folder in Python site-packages like so:
opencv site-packages
So what you need to do is just add the python-3.9 folder to your interpreter.
File
Settings...
Python interpreter
Three dots icon next to your interpreter -> Show all...
Select your interpreter and click on the "Show paths for selected interpreter" icon
Add the folder inside the cv2 site-packages
Now import the cv2 module normally.
The best way to solve all the problems of OPENCV-PYTHON is by uninstalling it and reinstalling it.
Even I faced the same problem.
I fixed it by:
python -m pip uninstall Opencv-python
Then I reinstalled it by using a lower version. But unfortunately, I did not know the versions of opencv; So by using a small trick you can get it by running:
python -m pip install opencv-python==
and you will get an error similar to this:

Here you can see all the versions of opencv-python; choose any one (but not the latest as the error occurs due the latest version of opencv-python. install it by using:
pip install opencv-python==3.4.17.61 (You can choose your version, but this version solved the issue for me)
then enjoy your coding....
Even AUTO-COMPLETE error in opencv-python gets solved.

I am having an issue getting OpenCV to work with python. I compiled from source using CMake in order to gain access to the SIFT module. Whenever I try to use openCV however, python returns the "No module named 'cv2'" error. It works fine when I install using pip but then I have no SIFT. My build directory is set as an environment variable and my bin directory is in my system path. There were no build issues and the applications that came with the build run fine. Is there another step that I have to perform, such as installing from the compiled project using pip? How do I get my openCV library, compiled from source, to be importable by python?
The solution ended up being both simpler and sloppier than I would have liked. I just installed the regular distribution using pip install opencv-contrib-python, then went into the cv2 folder in Lib/site-packages, replaced the python extension (cv2.cp36-win32.pyd in my case. may be different for others) with the .pyd file from my CMake build (build/lib/python3/Release) and copied everything from build/bin/Release into the Lib/site-packages/cv2 folder. It doesn't look pretty or organized but python can find everything now. If anyone has a cleaner way to do this I'd love to hear it.
In short, my question is, how do I install the latest version of scikit-image into my usr/lib/python3/dist-packages so I can actually use it? I think there is a problem with my understanding of how third-party modules are installed. As a newb, I don’t know how to rectify that, hence this post.
I need help to understand how to install packages in python3 up until now I have used pip/pip3/apt-get/synaptic etc and it has worked fine for many packages. However, I have hit several barriers (Skimage, opencv, plantcv in python3). I must emphasise, the problem I am having is using these packages in python3, not 2.7.
For example, I want to use the latest version of scikit-image (0.14) with python3. (http://scikit-image.org/) I have tried using the installation instructions and have not yet successfully managed to install it. I have navigated to my usr/lib/python3/dist-packages and copied scikit-image into this directory (I have all the dependencies installed in here already).

As you can see, the folder containing skimage is in the directory I want to be installed in, how do I actually install it? Do I have to extract skimage out of the folder into the directory and then run the install command? If I navigate to usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/scikit-image and then run pip install -e . I get an error, stating that I need numpy. If I write a python script using python3 I can clearly see I have it installed (and I have been using it for a long time). So, there must be a problem in how I have this package in my file system. I think a janky workaround would be to copy all the modules into my working directory and Import them that way as if they were modules I have made myself, but this obviously negates the whole point of installing packages.
This has also happened with another package called plantcv. Where I went into the directory usr/lib/python3/dist-packages then cloned the source from git hub and installed as per instructions. When I import plantcv in my python3 script. It Imports fine. But, there is nothing in it, as python cannot see the modules which are inside this folder at usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/plantcv/plantcv.
There is clearly some comprehension here that I am missing, as I have a similar problem for two packages now. Please, Internet. Help me understand what I am missing!
You simply need to copy the folder in /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/package-name
However, there are certain things that are specific to python packages. The folder named package name should be a valid package. A good indicator of that is it will contain a file "__init__.py". It is very likely that every sub-directory inside this package directory will contain a "__init__.py" file. It depends on whether there are modules inside these sub-directories.
In your code simply import the package like the following.
import package-name
where package-name can be skimage
I am fairly new to Python and trying to install the Pillow package on Windows 7. I downloaded and ran the MS Windows installer Pillow-2.2.1.win-amd64-py3.3.exe from here. It appeared to install fine. If I run the simple line of code:
from PIL import Image
directly from the Python interpreter, it runs fine. A help() on PIL gives me the package contents.
But when I try to run the same line of code from within a script, I get an ImportError: No module named PIL. What am I missing?
(Note that I've been able to import sys and import MySQLdb from within scripts just fine.)
Resolved: sure, enough, I'm running Python 2.7 when I run scripts. (I think I vaguely recall having to install an older version so I could interface with MySQL.) Thank you all for pointing out that I should check the version being used.
For third-party modules for Windows, my go-to resource is Christoph Gohlke's Python Extension Packages for Windows. You can find the latest version of Pillow here. Make sure you're working with the python.org version of Python.
As far as your specific error, it's hard to tell exactly without a traceback, but make sure your script is calling the correct version of Python. If you have also installed Python 2.7, for example, your script may be calling that instead of 3.3.
In such cases I'm simply printing the sys.path at the beginning of the script in trouble and comparing it with the one from the working python interpreter. In most cases I was running the script with a different python interpreter.
In my case , I was referring to wrong pip folder.
Changed virtual environment in pycharm to point to right pip folder to solve this issue

I want to be able to use the PIL library on a web hosting machine. The machine has Python 2.4.3 installed, but not the PIL library. I tried downloading the PIL source and putting the PIL folder into my directory. It kind of works, except when I need to do some actual image processing, which brings up an ImportError, saying that "The _imaging C module is not installed". Googling this, it seems like I would need to throw an _imaging.so file into the PIL folder, but I couldn't find a precompiled one online.
At this point, I'm not sure if I'm even on the right track. What should I do from here? Any help is appreciated.

You need to compile that module. Running the setup.py install command should do it for you, provided the host has a working compiler and the required libraries. You can use virtualenv to have it installed somewhere where you have rights to put files (by default it would try to install it system-wide).
If it doesn't have a working compiler and right libraries and header files, then you need to either compile it on another computer with the same architecture and copy it, or find the packages for whatever operating system your host is running and extract the right files from them.
By the way, just asking them to install PIL could work too!
I know this isn't a programmatic answer but ... you should switch webhosts.
There is no good reason to be using Python 2.4 and dealing with old stuff when so many problems have been fixed already. I recommend WebFaction but any host running a modern OS/Python installation is fine (Ubuntu is really the easiest at this point).
