Python version is (ActiveState) 2.7.1
MySQL is a prerequisite, as said in the README of MySQLDb
Same issue here, with same version of Python and MySQL installed (as part of XAMPP). Presumably the pre-requisite is for the "vanilla" MySQL installation and not one included in an *AMP package.
It's not an answer to the problem of installing from the tarball, but binary packages of MySQLdb compatible with ActiveState Python 2.7.1 and Windows 7 are available at this site:-
http://servut.us/akx/2010/09/mysqldb-windows-binaries-python-26-27/
Edit the following line in the site.cfg file, part of the mysql-python build directory, to point to your MySQL location.
registry_key = SOFTWARE\MySQL AB\MySQL Server 5.0

We've installed the python-ldap(2.4.19) module without errors and perform most of the operations successfully. However ldap.set_option always returns a exception when we try to load certificates to use ssl (ldaps).
It occurs on notebooks running Yosemite but not on Mavericks or Linux. (All Macbooks have xcode installed)
We think it should be some missing/outdated/updated lib but we don't know how to find it.
Any clues?

got around this by installing openldap threw brew, and then manually downloading the tarball, and mod setup.cfg to pick up /usr/local, and then install.
http://sourceforge.net/p/python-ldap/bugs/65/ is the ticket to add /usr/local to the defaults on python-ldap.

First question is, why does Python not simply include this MySQLdb module?
OK, just fine, try to search to solve this message.
I have looked around stackoverflow.com for installing this module but did not have a good result.
Download this module at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mysql-python/
Comes to the installation of this module on my Windows Vista system.
After the extraction of the package, I run the cmd prompt to continue with the installation:
$ python setup.py install
Again it showed me one other message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "setup.py", line 5, in <module>
from setuptools import setup, Extension
ImportError: No module named setuptools
Playing around with this error message, I know that there is the ez_setup.py within the package:
$python ez_setup.py
It seems that everything is OK:
D:\SOFTWARE\PROGRAMMING\MySQL-python-1.2.3c1>python ez_setup.py

Now comes back to the setup.py to install again:
$python setup.py install
It again gave me one other error message:

you can try compiling with MingW32, by passing "-c mingw32" to setup.py.
How can I fix this problem?
Did you try looking here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mysql-python/files/
That is the download area of MySQLdb project, it has nothing to do with django, so your question is incorrect - django does not make switching database backends hard, you just change one line. And of course, your python installation should support that database first, so by downloading binary package for Windows from the link I gave above (chose correct version to match your version of python) you can avoid all the hassle of compiling the source release.
Most probably you need either MySQL-python-1.2.2.win32-py2.5.exe or MySQL-python-1.2.2.win32-py2.4.exe
Uh, this isn't Django, this is you downloading some unspecified Python environment and expecting it to magically do everything exactly the way you wanted it to. Find a good tutorial on this and follow the instructions.
BTW, this is a very helpful forum, but giving no specifics and then delivering a non-question with an attitude is not a good way to get people to feel helpful.
I once had the same problem running Python and MySQL on the same computer. Like the guys/gals said above, Python does not come with built-in support for MySQL, so you will need to download the connectors.
The link given above by #kibitzer will most likely not work on Windows successfully, so go here to download a copy of the connector that works with windows. It comes with installer and no need to run setup.py script manually.
Here tis the error I get while trying to install MySQL-python-1.2.3. any idea's?

Trying to install this on Python 2.7 on a windows xp machine
Please take a look at this page: http://www.lfd.uci.edu/~gohlke/pythonlibs/ and search for "MySQL-python". You'll find some pre-compiled packages of MySQL-python for Windows. Maybe one of them will be ok for you.
Using one of them (for Windows 7) was the only way I found to make MySQL-python work on Windows.
There is a step by step on how to get around this problem here: http://www.fuyun.org/2009/12/install-mysql-for-python-on-windows/

I created a virtualbox with a fresh install of ubuntu 9.10.
I am trying to get MySQLdb to run on python but I'm failing at the import MySQLdb
I first tried sudo easy_install MySQL_python-1.2.3c1-py2.6-linux-i686.egg and then sudo apt-get install python-mysqldb.
Both apparently installed ok, but gave me the following error message when in python I have the import line:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>

ImportError: libmysqlclient_r.so.15: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I have already installed MySQL and it is running, if that matters at all.
I tried following this, but failed in step 2
Your MySQLdb egg installation looks like it is not working properly. You should go into /usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages and remove it.
The Ubuntu python-mysqldb package should work fine. Unless you have a good reason, you should stick to your distribution's package manager when installing new software.
