Use raw_input instead. See http://docs.python.org/library/functions.html#raw_input. input will do the same thing as eval(raw_input(prompt)), so entering in Jhon will try to find the symbol Jhon within the file (which doesn't exist). So for your existing script you'd have to input 'Jhon' (notice the set of quotes) in the prompt so the eval will convert the value to a string.
Here's the excerpt warning from the input documentation.
Warning
This function is not safe from user
errors! It expects a valid Python
expression as input; if the input is
not syntactically valid, a SyntaxError
will be raised. Other exceptions may
be raised if there is an error during
evaluation. (On the other hand,

NOTE: This is for Python2.x. Python3.x has fixed the input vs. raw_input confusion as explained in the other answers.

input gets text from the user which is then interpreted as Python code (hence it's trying to evaluate the thing you entered, Jhon). You need raw_input for both of them and you'll need to convert the number entered (since it's a string) to an integer for your range.

Create a username using Python

I'm just learning Python and have to create a program that has a function that takes as arguments a first and last name and creates a username. The username will be the first letter of the first name in lowercase, the last 7 of the last name in lowercase, and the total number of characters in the first and last names. For example, Jackie Robinson would be jobinson14. I have to use sys.argv.
This is my code:

Not exactly. You are using input(first), which is waiting for you to type something...
Using sys.argv means you need to provide the arguments when running the code
python app.py Darth Vader
And if you remove the input() lines, this would return without prompting for input, and not show Darth
As shown, you are trying to read from arguments and prompt for input.
If you did want to prompt, then you need to remove the import
def full_name(first, last):

And just run the script directly. But you say you have to use sys.argv, so the solution you're looking for is to not use input() at all.
When you call the input() function and assign it to first, like this:
first = input(first)
what you're doing is printing first (so "Darth"), waiting for the user to enter something, and then assigning that to first. That's why your script prints Darth -- it's waiting for you to tell it what first is.
But since you already passed the first and last name via the command line, you don't want to do that -- so just remove those two input lines. Make sure to convert the len to a str before you add it to the other strings!

return (first[0] + last[:7] + str(len(first+last))).lower()
You ask to input names even if they are in sys.argv.
Input("Enter name: ") accepts string that help to understand what you should input.
As OneCricketeer commented, you trying to get first 7 letters instead of last.
Here is an example that accepts names from command line otherwise prompt to input.

How to define a variable inside the print function?

I am a newbie in this field, and I am trying to solve a problem (not really sure if it is possible actually) where I want to print on the display some information plus some input from the user.
The following works fine:
>>> print (" Hello " + input("tellmeyourname: "))
tellmeyourname: dfsdf
Hello dfsdf
However if I want to assign user's input to a variable, I can't:
>>> print (" Hello ", name = input("tellmeyourname: "))
tellmeyourname: mike
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<pyshell#47>", line 1, in <module>
print (" Hello ", name = input("tellmeyourname: "))
TypeError: 'name' is an invalid keyword argument for this function
I have researched inside here and other python documentation, tried with %s etc. to solve, without result. I don't want to use it in two lines (first assigning the variable name= input("tellmeyourname:") and then printing).
Is this possible?
Starting from Python 3.8, this will become possible using an assignment expression:
print("Your name is: " + (name := input("Tell me your name: ")))
print("Your name is still: " + name)
Though 'possible' is not the same as 'advisable'...
But in Python <3.8: you can't. Instead, separate your code into two statements:
name = input("Tell me your name: ")
print("Your name is: " + name)
If you often find yourself wanting to use two lines like this, you could make it into a function:
def input_and_print(question):
s = input("{} ".format(question))
print("You entered: {}".format(s))
input_and_print("What is your name?")
Additionally you could have the function return the input s.
no this is not possible. well except something like
x=input("tell me:");print("blah %s"%(x,));
but thats not really one line ... it just looks like it

Manually keying in a number for list indices in python

I have a list of file name
eg. filenames=['blacklisted.txt', 'abc.txt', 'asfafa.txt', 'heythere.txt']
I would like to allow the users to manually choose which file name to display , for example ,

However, i got the error :

You have to first convert the input to int using int()
print "Please key in the first log file you would like to use: "
choice1=raw_input()
.
.
filename1=filenames[int(choice1)]
.
or you could convert the input straight to int
choice1 = int(raw_input())
filename1 = filenames[choice1]
You should also display the list of files with their corresponding index numbers so the user would know which to choose.
UPDATE
For error handling, you can try something like
while True:
choice1 = raw_input('Enter first file name index: ')
if choice1.strip() != '':
index1 = int(choice1)
if index1 >= 0 and index1 < len(filenames):
filename1 = filenames[index1]
break // this breaks the while loop when index is correct

Restricting the User Input to Alphabets

I'm a technical writer learning python. I wanted to write a program for validating the Name field input,as a practise, restricting the the user entries to alphabets.I saw a similar code for validating number (Age)field here, and adopted it for alphabets as below:

I intend this code block to do two things. Namely, display the input prompt until the user inputs alphabets only as 'Name'. Then, if that happens, process the length of that input and display messages as coded. But, I get two problems that I could not solve even after a lot of attempts. Either, even the correct entries are rejected by exception code or wrong entries are also accepted and their length is processed.
Please help me to debug my code. And, is it possible to do it without using the reg exp?
If you're using Python, you don't need regular expressions for this--there are included libraries which include functions which might help you. From this page on String methods, you can call isalpha():
Return true if all characters in the string are alphabetic and there is at least one character, false otherwise.
I would suggest using isalpha() in your if-statement instead of x==r.
I don't understand what you're trying to do with
x = r
if x == r:
etc
That condition will obviously always be true.
With your current code you were never saving the input, just printing it straight out.
You also had no loop, it would only ask for the name twice, even if it was wrong both times it would continue.
I think what you tried to do is this:

One way to do this would be to do the following:
namefield = raw_input("Your Name: ")
if not namefield.isalpha():
print "Please use only alpha charactors"
elif not 4<=len(namefield)<=10:
print "Name must be more than 4 characters and less than 10"

print "hello" + namefield
isalpha will check to see if the whole string is only alpha characters. If it is, it will return True.

New line for input in Python

I am very new to Python programming (15 minutes) I wanted to make a simple program that would take an input and then print it back out. This is how my code looks.
Number = raw_input("Enter a number")
print Number
How can I make it so a new line follows. I read about using \n but when I tried:
Number = raw_input("Enter a number")\n
print Number
It didn't work.
Put it inside of the quotes:
Number = raw_input("Enter a number\n")
\n is a control character, sort of like a key on the keyboard that you cannot press.
You could also use triple quotes and make a multi-line string:
Number = raw_input("""Enter a number
""")
If you want the input to be on its own line then you could also just
print "Enter a number"
Number = raw_input()
I do this:
print("What is your name?")
name = input("")
print("Hello" , name + "!")
So when I run it and type Bob the whole thing would look like:
What is your name?
Bob
Hello Bob!
