How can I update all python modules I have installed on ubuntu?

Ubuntu's repositories usually contain up-to-date versions of Python modules (prefixed with python-) and if you do an apt-get dist-upgrade will update any that you've installed from the repos.
As for packages you may have installed with easy_install, you could use distribute to upgrade them.
Alternatively, you can construct a list of packages you have installed with yolk, and pass the packages in the list from yolk -l to easy_install.

Here is a one click simple command to do so:
pip freeze --local | grep -v '^\-e' | cut -d = -f 1 | xargs sudo pip install -U

Checkout setuptools (a/k/a "easy_install"), the classic way of doing it, or distribute, the new way to handle all your Python module installation needs.

You can install python packages using python3.6 -m pip install [Package_to_install] straight away.
I use PipEnv for working in different environments with different python versions.
the usage would be something like pipenv --python 3.X and it will install that version of python if its not installed.
It also makes things really helpful if you are collaborating with other developers, because it creates a PipFile (alt to requirements.pip) which will contain the version of python used for the project so all developers will use the same version of python on a project without doing any prep work.
If you don't want to use pipenv you can use pip3.5 or create a python3.5 environment like virtualenv [NAME] --python=/usr/lib/python3.5 and then install the package using pip install somepackage

Pip command not found in bash - OSX [duplicate]

I downloaded pip and ran python setup.py install and everything worked just fine. The very next step in the tutorial is to run pip install <lib you want> but before it even tries to find anything online I get an error "bash: pip: command not found".
This is on Mac OS X. I'm assuming there's some kind of path setting that was not set correctly when I ran setup.py. How can I investigate further? What do I need to check to get a better idea of the exact cause of the problem?
EDIT: I also tried installing Python 2.7 for Mac in the hopes that the friendly install process would do any housekeeping like editing PATH and whatever else needs to happen for everything to work according to the tutorials, but this didn't work. After installing, running 'python' still ran Python 2.6 and PATH was not updated.
Why not just do sudo easy_install pip or if this is for python 2.6 sudo easy_install-2.6 pip?
This installs pip using the default python package installer system and saves you the hassle of manual set-up all at the same time.
This will allow you to then run the pip command for python package installation as it will be installed with the system python. I also recommend once you have pip using the virtualenv package and pattern. :)

For current Debian/Ubuntu, use
apt-get install python3-pip
to install pip3.

Use setuptools to install pip: sudo easy_install pip

For Python 3, use apt-get install python3-pip.
First of all: try pip3 instead of pip. Example:
pip3 --version
pip 9.0.1 from /usr/local/lib/python3.6/site-packages (python 3.6)
pip3 should be installed automatically together with Python3.x. The documentation hasn't been updated, so simply replace pip by pip3 in the instructions, when installing Flask for example.
Now, if this doesn't work, you might have to install pip separately.
Update: A more reliable modern way to access the right pip install for the right python install is to use the syntax python -m pip.

pip would install itself into the bin of your python installation location. It also should create a symlink to some more common location like /usr/local/bin/pip
You can either edit your ~/.profile and update your PATH to include /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin, or you could create a symlink to it in a place that you know is in your path.
If you do: echo $PATH, you should see the paths currently being searched. If /usr/local/bin is in your PATH, you can do:
ln -s /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin/pip /usr/local/bin
I would opt for adding the python bin to your $PATH variable.
I encountered this problem having downloaded python 3.x.x and trying to install awscli - pip: command not found.
Whilst following the instructions for downloading the AWS client, I changed
pip install awscli
to
pip3 install awscli
which ran the correct version.
I've made an alias on my machine to run python3 whilst typing python, which would normally run the system version 2.7. I'm not sure this is a good idea now. I think I'll just type in the commands as they intended them to be.

The answer is to use pip3:

Installing using apt-get installs a system wide pip, not just a local one for your user. Try this command to get pip running on your system ...

Not sure why this wasnt mentioned before, but the only thing that worked for me (on my NVIDIA Xavier) was:

What I did to overcome this was sudo apt install python-pip.
It turned out my virtual machine did not have pip installed yet. It's conceivable that other people could have this scenario too.
The updated command for installing pip3 is :

The problem seems that your python version and the library yoıu want to install is not matching versionally. Ex: If Django is Django3 and your python version is 2.7, you may get this error.

2- Change your PATH manually as python38 and compare them.
3- Try to reinstall.

As I see you cloned ansible from git. Try to remove ansible folder, but first, go to cloned folder and write
make uninstall
then
cd ..
rm -r ansible_folder
and dependent folders, files for example '/etc/ansible' folder.
I had built ansible 2.1.1 from source then wanted to downgrade to 2.1.0 using yum. The trick i learned was to go to /lib/python2.7/site-packages and deleting the ansible-2.1.1.0-py2.7.egg-info directory. In my case, using yum properly added files to /etc/ansible and /usr/bin, but as long as the old (newer version number) egg was there, then ansible --version continued to show the newer version number.
After removing ansible using dnf remove ansible uninstall python and reinstall ansible it will show the newer version.

How can I use a pip requirements file to uninstall as well as install packages?

I have a pip requirements file that changes during development.
Can pip be made to uninstall packages that do not appear in the requirements file as well as installing those that do appear? Is there a standard method?
This would allow the pip requirements file to be the canonical list of packages - an 'if and only if' approach.

This should uninstall anything not in requirements.txt:
pip freeze | grep -v -f requirements.txt - | grep -v '^#' | xargs pip uninstall -y
Although this won't work quite right with packages installed with -e, i.e. from a git repository or similar. To skip those, just filter out packages starting with the -e flag:
pip freeze | grep -v -f requirements.txt - | grep -v '^#' | grep -v '^-e ' | xargs pip uninstall -y

Check out pipenv or Poetry. A lot has happened in the world of package management that makes this sort of question a bit obsolete. I'm actually still quite happily using pip-tools, though.
You can now pass the -r requirements.txt argument to pip uninstall.

It's not a feature of pip, no. If you really want such a thing, you could write a script to compare the output of pip freeze with your requirements.txt, but it would likely be more hassle than it's worth.
Using virtualenv, it is easier and more reliable to just create a clean environment and (re)install from requirements.txt, like:

virtualenv venv/
source venv/bin/activate
pip install -r requirements.txt
The short answer is no, you can't do that with pip.
Here's a simple solution that works:
pip uninstall $(pip freeze) -y
This is an old question (but a good one), and things have changed substantially since it was asked.
There's an offhand reference to pip-sync in another answer, but deserves its own answer, because it solves precisely the OP's problem.
pip-sync takes a requirements.txt file as input, and "trues up" your current Python environment so that it matches exactly what's in that requirements.txt. This includes removing any packages that are present in your env but absent from requirements.txt.
Example: Suppose we want our env to contain (only) 3 libraries: libA, libB, and libC, like so:
> cat requirements.txt
libA==1.0
libB==1.1
libC==1.2
But our env currently contains libC and libD:
> pip freeze
libC==1.2
libD==1.3
Running pip-sync will result in this, which was our desired final state:
> pip-sync requirements.txt
> pip freeze
libA==1.0
libB==1.1
libC==1.2
Stephen's proposal is a nice idea, but unfortunately it doesn't work
if you include only direct requirements in your file, which sounds
cleaner to me.

Maintaining a clean requirements file while version tracking a virtual environment
Here is how I try to version-track my virtual environment.
I try to maintain a minimal requirements.txt, including only
the direct requirements, and not even mentioning version constraints where
I'm not sure.
But besides, I keep, and include in version tracking (say git),
the actual status of my virtualenv in a venv.pip file.
Here is a sample workflow:
setup virtualenv workspace, with version tracking:
mkdir /tmp/pip_uninstalling
cd /tmp/pip_uninstalling
virtualenv venv
. venv/bin/activate
initialize version tracking system:
git init
echo venv > .gitignore
pip freeze > venv.pip

Now uninstall extraneous packages:

I suppose the process can be automated with git hooks, but let's not go off topic.
Of course, it makes sense then to use some package caching system
or local repository like pip2pi
you can create a new file with all installed packages
pip freeze > uninstall.txt
and then uninstall all of those
pip uninstall -r uninstall.txt -y
and then finally re-install the packages you had in your original requirements.txt file
pip install -r requirements.txt
Piggybacking off #stephen-j-fuhry here is a powershell equivalent I use:
pip freeze | ? { $_ -notmatch ((gc req.txt) -join "|") }
While this doesn't directly answer the question, a better alternative to requirements.txt now is using a Pipfile. This functions similarly to a Ruby Gemfile. Currently, you need to make use of the pipenv tool but hopefully this will eventually be incorporated into pip. This provides the pipenv clean command which does what you want.
(Note that you can import an existing requirements.txt with pipenv install -r requirements.txt. After this you should have a Pipfile and the requirements.txt can be removed.)
It is possible now using:
pip uninstall -r requirements.txt

How to install python3 version of package via pip on Ubuntu?

I have both python2.7 and python3.2 installed in Ubuntu 12.04.
The symbolic link python links to python2.7.
When I type:
sudo pip install package-name
It will default install python2 version of package-name.

Ubuntu 12.10+ and Fedora 13+ have a package called python3-pip which will install pip-3.2 (or pip-3.3, pip-3.4 or pip3 for newer versions) without needing this jumping through hoops.
I came across this and fixed this without needing the likes of wget or virtualenvs (assuming Ubuntu 12.04):
Install package python3-setuptools: run sudo aptitude install python3-setuptools, this will give you the command easy_install3.
Install pip using Python 3's setuptools: run sudo easy_install3 pip, this will give you the command pip-3.2 like kev's solution.
Install your PyPI packages: run sudo pip-3.2 install <package> (installing python packages into your base system requires root, of course).

You may want to build a virtualenv of python3, then install packages of python3 after activating the virtualenv. So your system won't be messed up :)

The short answer applies only on newer systems. On some versions of Ubuntu the command is pip-3.2:
sudo pip-3.2 install MODULE_NAME
If it doesn't work, this method should work for any Linux distro and supported version:
sudo apt-get install curl
curl https://bootstrap.pypa.io/get-pip.py | sudo python3
sudo pip3 install MODULE_NAME
If you don't have curl, use wget. If you don't have sudo, switch to root. If pip3 symlink does not exists, check for something like pip-3.X

I want to add that using a virtual environment is usually the preferred way to develop a python application, so #felixyan answer is probably the best in an ideal world. But if you really want to install that package globally, or if need to test / use it frequently without activating a virtual environment, I suppose installing it as a global package is the way to go.

So what I have done to install pylab within Python 3 is:
python3 -m pip install SomePackage
It has worked properly, and as you can see in the link you can do this for every Python version you have, so I guess this solves your problem.
Old question, but none of the answers satisfies me. One of my systems is running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and for some reason there's no package python3-pip or python-pip for Python 3. So here is what I've done (all commands were executed as root):
Install setuptools for Python3 in case you haven't.
apt-get install python3-setuptools
or
aptitude install python3-setuptools
With Python 2.4+ you can invoke easy_install with specific Python version by using python -m easy_install. So pip for Python 3 could be installed by:
python3 -m easy_install pip
That's it, you got pip for Python 3. Now just invoke pip with the specific version of Python to install package for Python 3. For example, with Python 3.2 installed on my system, I used:
pip-3.2 install [package]
If you have pip installed in both pythons, and both are in your path, just use:

Firstly, you need to install pip for the Python 3 installation that you want. Then you run that pip to install packages for that Python version.
Since you have both pip and python 3 in /usr/bin, I assume they are both installed with a package manager of some sort. That package manager should also have a Python 3 pip. That's the one you should install.
Felix' recommendation of virtualenv is a good one. If you are only testing, or you are doing development, then you shouldn't install the package in the system python. Using virtualenv, or even building your own Pythons for development, is better in those cases.
But if you actually do want to install this package in the system python, installing pip for Python 3 is the way to go.
Although the question relates to Ubuntu, let me contribute by saying that I'm on Mac and my python command defaults to Python 2.7.5. I have Python 3 as well, accessible via python3, so knowing the pip package origin, I just downloaded it and issued sudo python3 setup.py install against it and, surely enough, only Python 3 has now this module inside its site packages. Also,one can create an alias for the same using
echo 'alias py="/opt/python3.3/bin/python3.3"' >> ~/.bashrc
