To add to the recommendation of the Python OpenID library: their docs pages for the server and consumer modules both have useful Overview sections which you should read as a good starting point. The examples directory is also useful; I've written things starting from server.py and consumer.py from there.

I am writing an application that uses Google's python client for GCS.

I've had no issues using this, until I needed to write my functional tests.
The way our organization tests integrations like this is to write a simple stub of the API endpoints I hit, and point the Google client library (in this case) to my stub, instead of needing to hit Google's live endpoints.
I'm using a service account for authentication and am able to point the client at my stub when fetching a token because it gets that value from the service account's json key that you get when you create the service account.
What I don't seem able to do is point the client library at my stubbed API instead of making calls directly to Google.
Some work arounds that I've though of, that I don't like are:
- Allow the tests to hit the live endpoints.
- Put in some configuration that toggles using the real Google client library, or a mocked version of the library. I'd rather mock the API versus having mock code deployed to production.
Any help with this is greatly appreciated.
I’ve made some research and it seems like there’s nothing supported specifically for Cloud Storage using python. I found this GitHub issue entry with a related discussion, but for go.
I think you can open a public issue tracker asking for this functionality. I’m afraid by now it’s easier to keep using your second workaround.
I wanted to ask you about microservices in Python. As of writing this, i got pretty good with writing well structured flask-restful APIs and I wanted to go and learn about microservices in python.
Right now I have read up quite a lot of info regarding this and even searched online to find examples for this (1 example here) but I am not really sure exactly where to start as I don't want to invest too much time in a inefficient pattern.
So I wanted to know if anyone know any courses with examples for Python on building high load services. My only hints so far as asyncio and aiohttp for request handling and i'm not sure if using a message broker (such as zeromq or rabbitmq) would be a good idea as from what I read, it adds request lag.
Any advice would be great.
PS: The current pattern I'm stuck on is the API Gateway pattern and I would also want to know if it is a good direction as a start.
There are plenty of microservice frameworks in Python that can handle high load and get you a long way towards following best practices.
Try for example pymacaron (http://pymacaron.com/). Pymacaron is basically a flask app whose endpoints are auto-spawn from a swagger specification. To write a pymacaron microservice, you mostly have to:
(1) write a swagger specification for your api (which is always a good starting point, whatever language you are using). Your swagger file describes the get/post/etc calls of your api and which objects (json dicts) they get and return, but also which python method in your code that implement the endpoint.
(2) and implement your endpoints' methods.
Once you have done that, you get loads of things for free: you can package your code as a docker container, deploy it to amazon beanstalk, start asynchronous tasks from within your api calls, or get the api documentation with no extra work.

I'm working on a tracking proxy (for want of a better term) written in Python. It's a simple http (wsgi) application that will run on one (maybe more) server and accepts event data from a desktop client. This service would then forward the tracking data on to some actual tracking platform (DeskMetrics, MixPanel, Google Analytics) so that we don't have to deal with the slicing and dicing of data.
The reason for this implementation is that it's much easier and faster to make changes to a server process that we control rather than having to ensure every client in the wild gets updated if the tracking backend changes in some way.
I've been looking up info on the various options and I was hoping somebody here would have some good advice from their own experiences. Ideally we'd be able to use Google Analytics as it's free for any amount of usage but paid options are fine.
My only real requirement is either a good Python library or a well documented api that I can write a wrapper for (this seems somewhat lacking in GA when it comes to triggering events through any method other than their js or other provided libs).
N.B. We're not really tracking server code so something like NewRelic isn't appropriate, we're just decoupling a desktop application from the specifics of the tracking backend.
We ran into this same problem a bunch of times, we ended up building a suite of server-side analytics libraries to make this easier.
Segment.io has libraries for Python, Ruby, Java, Node, .NET and PHP that abstract the APIs for Mixpanel, KISSmetrics, Google Analytics and a bunch of other analytics services.
You could integrate the Python library once, and then send your data wherever you want. The data is proxied through Segment.io's hosted service. Hopefully this cleans up the mess of integrating a bunch of libraries, each with slightly different APIs. (The service is free for the first million events.)

I'm trying to write a simple mail server using Python.
I found smtpd that can be used as a simple smtp server, but I don't think it supports any form of authentication.
For pop or imap, I haven't found anything at all yet.
I do know Twisted has some support for both smtp and pop or imap, but I can't find any examples or tutorials about it.
An alternative would be to use Clojure, but I still have the same question:
Which libraries should I use and is there any documentation about them?

A bit late probably but for experimentation you might also want to check pymta which is a pure-python SMTP implementation I'm using for some experiments/testing. It supports SMTP basic auth. Documentation should be at a 'decent' level, check the examples directory and the unit tests-
For anything production-related I'd go for twisted if you don't mind the asynchronous nature.
I'm developing a website (in Django) that uses OpenID to authenticate users. As I'm currently only running on my local machine I can't authenticate using one of the OpenID providers on the web. So I figure I need to run a local OpenID server that simply lets me type in a username and then passes that back to my main app.
Does such an OpenID dev server exist? Is this the best way to go about it?
The libraries at OpenID Enabled ship with examples that are sufficient to run a local test provider. Look in the examples/djopenid/ directory of the python-openid source distribution. Running that will give you an instance of this test provider.
I have no problems testing with myopenid.com. I thought there would be a problem testing on my local machine but it just worked. (I'm using ASP.NET with DotNetOpenId library).
The 'realm' and return url must contain the port number like 'http://localhost:93359'.
I assume it works OK because the provider does a client side redirect.

I'm using phpMyID to authenticate at StackOverflow right now. Generates a standard HTTP auth realm and works perfectly. It should be exactly what you need.
You could probably use the django OpenID library to write a provider to test against. Have one that always authenticates and one that always fails.
Why not run an OpenID provider from your local machine?
If you are a .Net developer there is an OpenID provider library for .Net at Google Code. This uses the standard .Net profile provider mechanism and wraps it with an OpenID layer. We are using it to add OpenID to our custom authentication engine.
If you are working in another language/platform there are a number of OpenID implementation avalaiable from the OpenID community site here.
You shouldn't be having trouble developing against your own machine. What error are you getting?
An OpenID provider will ask you to give your site (in this case http://localhost:8000 or similar) access to your identity. If you click ok then it will redirect you that url. I've never had problems with livejournal and I expect that myopenid.com will work too.
If you're having problems developing locally I suggest that the problem you're having is unrelated to the url being localhost, but something else. Without an error message or problem description it's impossible to say more.
Edit: It turns out that Yahoo do things differently to other OpenID providers that I've come across and disallow redirections to ip address, sites without a correct tld in their domain name and those that run on ports other than 80 or 443. See here for a post from a Yahoo developer on this subject. This post offers a work around, but I would suggest that for development myopenid.com would be far simpler than working around Yahoo, or running your own provider.
