When trying to use the Toktok word tokenizer from NLTK in Python3
string='&& Test & and L&R '
from nltk.tokenize.toktok import ToktokTokenizer
ToktokTokenizer().tokenize(string)
I obtain the following output:
['&&', 'Test', '&', 'and', 'L&R']
Looks like it escapes the & in a strange way.
I'm using NLTK version 3.3 and Python 3.6.4.
Any guess why this happens and an efficient way of solving it?
I know I can go through the answer with
[tok.replace("&","&") for tok in tokenized_sentence]
but it seems a dirty hack. I would like to know if there is a way of not producing this effect in the first way.

Explanation: I use re.split to split str into elements:

Then I create flag inside which I will use to store if I am currently inside or outside { and } and act accordingly.
If I find { I set flag and go to next element (continue)
If I am not inside brackets I simply add given element to every

this element to options list.
If I am inside and find } then I made variants for every
possible part of (one of variants),(one of options) and
variants become effect of this operation.
Note that I assume that: always correct str will be given as text and { will be used solely as control character and } will be used solely as control character and | inside { } will be used solely as control character.

You need to use parts of speech tags for that, or actually dependency parsing would be more accurate. I haven't tried with nltk, but with spaCy you can do it like this:

I also suggest first lemmatizing the sentence to get rid of conjugations. Also if you need noun phrases, with the similar way you can use compound relationship.
I want to separate a string on commas and/or periods in nltk. I've tried with sent_tokenize() but it separates only on periods.

I am trying to parse strings in such a way as to separate out all word components, even those that have been contracted. For example the tokenization of "shouldn't" would be ["should", "n't"].
The nltk module does not seem to be up to the task however as:
"I wouldn't've done that."
tokenizes as:
['I', "wouldn't", "'ve", 'done', 'that', '.']
where the desired tokenization of "wouldn't've" was: ['would', "n't", "'ve"]
After examining common English contractions, I am trying to write a regex to do the job but I am having a hard time figuring out how to match "'ve" only once. For example, the following tokens can all terminate a contraction:
n't, 've, 'd, 'll, 's, 'm, 're
But the token "'ve" can also follow other contractions such as:
'd've, n't've, and (conceivably) 'll've
At the moment, I am trying to wrangle this regex:
\b[a-zA-Z]+(?:('d|'ll|n't)('ve)?)|('s|'m|'re|'ve)\b
However, this pattern also matches the badly formed:
"wouldn't've've"
It seems the problem is that the third apostrophe qualifies as a word boundary so that the final "'ve" token matches the whole regex.
I have been unable to think of a way to differentiate a word boundary from an apostrophe and, failing that, I am open to advice for alternative strategies.
Also, I am curious if there is any way to include the word boundary special character in a character class. According to the Python documentation, \b in a character class matches a backspace and there doesn't seem to be a way around this.

I can't figure out the third match. In particular, I just realized that if the third apostrophe were matching the leading \b, then I don't know what would be matching the character class [a-zA-Z]+.

It not clear to me what you want done with all punctuation. On the one hand, it looks like you want periods to be removed, but single quotation marks to be kept. It would be easy to implement the removal of periods, but before I do, would you clarify what you want to happen to all punctuation?

There are two problems with your approach:
Neither \w nor \s matches punctuation.
When you match a string with a regular expression using findall, that part of the string is consumed. Searching for the next match commences immediately after the end of the previous match. Because of this a word can't be included in two separate matches.
To solve the first issue you need to decide what you mean by a word. Regular expressions aren't good for this sort of parsing. You might want to look at a natural language parsing library instead.
But assuming that you can come up with a regular expression that works for your needs, to fix the second problem you can use a lookahead assertion to check the second word. This won't return the entire match as you want but you can at least find the first word in each word pair using this method.
