How to run commands from within Visual Studio PTVS? - python

I'm using Visual Studio 2012 and PTVS to play around with locustio and suds.
I have setup an environment using virtualenv in Visual Studio and installed locustio, suds and all the associated dependencies.
If I was to run locust via the command line in Mac or Linux I'd do something like:
`locust -f theFileToRun.py'
and locust would run and open a locally hosted page where I could control locust.
Django has a similar setup where you type runserver from the command line and your django project is locally hosted.
I've noticed that PTVS has a 'Django Launcher' listed under Launch Mode, which I assume takes care of this.
How can I (neatly!) run locust or other CLI commands from within Visual Studio?

Right now, Django is the only Python web framework which we have special support for, and yes, this includes starting the server for you (and also opening the browser and navigating to the local website).
For everything else, you'll need to use the regular console for the time being. This VS extension might be of help there.
Given that running various shell commands in project root is not an uncommon activity when developing Python code, and that we can't special-case all the numerous frameworks out there, it does actually sound like an interesting feature for us to consider. I believe we don't have it in the issue tracker in the moment, so go ahead and add it there.

Need advice on how to incorporate Python into an Azure ASP.NET web application environment. Please excuse this question but I am new to Azure and I'm not clear on how to proceed. Every option that I look into looks promising but they all seem to have their own issues. Below is a more thorough explanation but the deal is that I have an Azure account with all kinds of goodies, a full fledged ASP.NET (C#) web app running via App Service, I am new to Azure (but not Python), and I'm hoping to add Python functionality to this whole setup. In short:
I want to add Python to this setup mainly to run scheduled jobs and also to trigger Python code from ASP.NET web form submissions
ideally I want a solution that resembles a non-cloud setup. I know this sounds silly but I'm finding the cloud/Azure functionality to be nuanced and not straightforward. I want a place to put a bunch of Python scripts, run, edit, schedule and trigger them from ASP.NET
for example: I created a WebJob that runs manually and from the documentation it wasn't clear how it should be called. I just figured out that you need to POST with Basic Auth (and the credentials provided).
!Also, Azure CMD does NOT like files with 'underscore _' in them! You cannot submit a Web Job with a py file with an underscore nor can you write output with a file with an underscore
!Also, I don't see an option for this Web Job to run Python 3.6.4 (which I installed via extension). Right now it is using 2.7.15...
!Also, CRON expression in Azure has six *, not five plus a command. Again, more weird stuff to worry about

Currently I have an ASP.NET site running via Azure App Service and I would like to add Python scripts and possibly Flask/Rest functionality. Note that I am not expecting to serve any content via Python and will largely be running Python scripts either on a scheduled basis or call them from ASP.NET. As a matter of fact, and this is an important point, I'm hoping to have ASP.NET trigger/run a Python script when a web form is submitted. I realize that I could get a similar effect if I make a web call to a Rest api that is running Python. In any event, I can't tell if I should:
add a Python extension to the current App Service running the web page (I tried this) OR
I did install Python 3.6.4 and some packages via pip
These instructions were useful, however the updates to the web page's Web.config file breaks the ASP.NET web pages
set up a VM that will have all of the Python code (but how can I have the .NET web page(s) call the Python in the VM?) OR
use Azure functions (I'm completely new to this and must admit that I prefer to have my old school Python environment instead although I see the benefit of using functions. But how do you deal with logging and debugging?)
or what about a custom windows container (Docker)?
This requires installing VS Code and that is OK but I'm looking for a solution that another user can get into with as few interruptions as possible
The idea is to ramp up the use of Python although, like I said, I don't expect Python to be serving any of the web content. It will be used to run in the background and to run scheduled jobs. What is the most robust and hopefully easiest way to add Python functionality to Azure (most importantly in a way to be able to trigger/use Python from an App Service running .NET?)? I've searched online and stack overflow so far with interesting finds but nothing to my liking.

The Docker method looks very promising, however, I'm looking for a simple solution as there is another person who will be involved in all of this and he's busy with other projects

I found a solution, though I'm open to more info. Like I mentioned in my post, I used the 'add extension' tool to add Python 3.6.4 to my Azure (installed in D:\home\python364x64).
Then I installed a bunch of packages via pip, these installed into D:\home\python364x64\Lib\site-packages.
I created a Python folder in webpages\Python where I put my scripts.
Finally, in ASP.NET I used the Diagnostics.Process call to run my code in ~\webpages\Python\somecode_2.py
The main issue is that Azure came with Python 2.7.15 installed. And for some reason when my Python code got executed it was using 3.4 (where that version came from beats me). So for each script, I had to create an _2.py version where I simply did the following in order to call the original script via Python 3.6.4. Looks a little nasty but it works. So like I said, I would welcome more info for ways to do this better...

Jenkins Build Python Project

I need to set up a Jenkins server to build a python project. But I can't find any good tutorials online to do this, most of what I see uses pip, but our project simply works on
python.exe setup.py build
I've tried running it as a Windows Batch file setting it up through the configure options in Jenkins, where I enter the above line in the box provided, but the build fails.
When I try to run this I get a build error telling me there is no cmd file or program in my project's workspace. But it seems to me that cmd would be a program inherent to Jenkins itself in this case.
What's the best way to go about setting up Jenkins to build a python project using setup.py?
Really i used jenkins to test Java EE project and i don't khnow if it will be the same principle or not ,
so i downloaded the jenkins.war from the website and i deployed it on my jboss server and I reached it via an url on the browser : http://localhost:serverport/jenkins the i created a job and i select the server & jdk & maven & the location of my project in workspace then i make a run to build the project.

I relaized I did something stupid and forgot that my coworker had set it up on a UNIX server, so I should have been using the shell instead of Windows Batch. Once I changed that and installed the python plugin, I got it to build fine.

Can't run coursebuilder in google app engine

It is really weird that after clicking run button, it does nothing and also no log and show a clock sign on the first column.
It works normally before. However, after I messed up my python environment, the google coursebuilder can't run web application. That's my guessing. When I run which python.it only shows:
/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/bin/python
These let me feel like I have no way to solve it!Are there anyone who came across this problem before? Any ideas or suggestions?
Updated: I follow suggestions to use command line to run web application on GAE. It reminds me here:
Update: The error message shows that GAE can't get the allocated port and domain. The reason why it happens is that when I use command line to run the web application, I also open GAE GUI to run a web app with the same port number.
So the way to solve it is to close the GAE GUI and free the port. Or we also could designate another kind of port number with command line.(--port=XXXX and --admin_port=YYYY). Or take a look at the doc:

The OP had multiple issues with GAE setup which were resolved by simply reinstalling the GAE Launcher and making sure the app was first copied into Applications from the .dmg file, then ran from the Applications instead of from inside the .dmg file, and appropriate permissions were suppose to be given so that GAE Launcher created the symlinks it needed to work properly.

Using vagrant as part of development environment

I'm investigating ways to add vagrant to my development environment. I do most of my web development in python, and I'm interested in python-related specifics, however the question is more general.
I like the idea of having all development-related stuff isolated in virtual machine, but I haven't yet discovered an effective way to work with it. Basically, I see 3 ways to set it up:
Have all services (such as database server, MQ, etc) as well as an application under development to run in VM. Developer would ssh to VM and edit sources there, run app, tests, etc, all in an ssh terminal.
Same as 1), but edit sources on host machine in mapped directory with normal GUI editor. Run application and tests on vagrant via ssh. This seems to be most popular way to use vagrant.
Host only external services in VM. Install app dependencies into virtualenv on host machine and run app and tests from there.
All of these approaches have their own flaws:
Developing in text console is just too inconvenient, and this is the show-stopper for me. While I'm experienced ViM user and could live with it, I can't recommend this approach to anyone used to work in any graphical IDE.
You can develop with your familiar tools, but you cannot use autocompletion, since all python libs are installed in VM. Your tracebacks will point to non-local files. You will not be able to open library sources in your editor, ctags will not work.
Losing most of "isolation" feature: you have to install all compilers, *-dev libraries yourself to install python dependencies and run an app. It is pretty easy on linux, but it might be much harder to set them all up on OSX and on Windows it is next to impossible I guess.
So, the question is: is there any remedy for problems of 2nd and 3rd approaches? More specifically, how is it possible to create an isolated and easily replicatable environment, and yet enjoy all the comfort of development on host machine?
In most IDE you can add "library" path which are outside the project so that your code completion etc works. About the traceback, I'm unfamiliar with python but this sounds like issue that are resolved by "mapping" paths between servers and dev machine. This is generally the reason why #2 is often the way to go (Except when you have a team willing to do #1).

Distributing a stand-alone Python web-based application to non-technical users

I'm writing a web application in Python, intended for use by teachers and pupils in a classroom. It'll run from a hosted website, but I also want people to be able to download a self-contained application they can install locally if they want more performance or they simply won't have an Internet connection available in the classroom.
The users aren't going to be able to manage instructions like "first install Python, then install dependencies, download the .tar.gz archive and type these commands into the command line...". I need to be able to create an all-in-one type installer that can potentially install Python, dependencies (Python-LDAP), some Python code, and register a Python-based web server as a Windows Service.
I've had a look through previous questions, but none quite seem relevant. I'm not concerned about the security of source code (my application will be open source, I'll sell content to go with it), I just need non-technical Windows users to be able to download and use my application with no fuss.
My current thoughts are to use NSIS to create an installer that includes Python and Python-LDAP as MSIs, then registers my own simple Python-based web server as a Windows service and puts a shortcut in the start menu / on the desktop linking to http://localhost. Is this doable with NSIS - can NSIS check for currently installed copies of Python, for instance? Is there a better way of doing this - is there a handy framework available that lets me shove my code in a folder and bundle it up to make an installer?
Using NSIS is great (i use it too) but i would suggest using a "packager" like pyinstaller (my personal fav, alternatives bb_freeze, py2exe) to create an exe before the using NSIS
The primary benefit you get by doing this is;
Your download is smaller as you're not bundling the whole Python Standard Lib and extra stuff your app wont need and you get an exe file to boot!
