How to edit and save the data in an existing excel workbook using xlrd, xlwt and xlutils module?
could someone please provide a sample code to edit and save the data in excel workbook?
I am trying to put data from one workbook to another.
import xlrd, xlwt, xlutils
wb1 = xlrd.open_workbook('workbook1.xls', formatting_info=True)
wb2 = xlrd.open_workbook('workbook2.xls', formatting_info=True)
value 1 == wb2.sheet_by_name('Sheet1).cell(2,1).value

You can save with wb1.save('workbook1.xls'). You might get an IOError that the file already exists. In that case try to os.remove() the file before saving.
I agree with the previous answer of using the xlwt library save method. But you should also do some proof reading of your code. You are missing a closing quote for Sheet1 and variable names cannot have spaces.

You should try xlwings. It is very easy to use.

You can read xls files with the help of python module xlrd to install it use the command.
pip install xlrd
Below is the example of how to use xlrd to open spreadsheet in python.

I am trying to read an excel with pandas but because it has formulae it will return nan values when reading it instead of the cell values.
df=pd.read_excel('Test.xlsx',sheet_name='Sheet1')

You need to open the empty_book.xlsx with Excel and save it if you want to see the formula result
This question is a quite stale but I didn't find another one that explicitly answer's the OP's question. Assuming you're opening a .xlsx file and not a .xls, you can do:
workbook = openpyxl.load_workbook(filename=excel_path, data_only=True)
data = pd.read_excel(workbook, sheet_name='Sheet1', engine='openpyxl')
Note that pandas reads .xls files with xlrd, and I'm not sure what the best way to achieve the same thing with that library would be.
I have a .xlsm file as a reference template. I want to update the values of this .xlsm file using python from a .csv file.

I tried using pandas.to_excel method. but the .xlsm file gets corrupted after I write to sheet.

Maybe to try xlwings, using it something like this?

This is the best tool to update xlsm files since it uses WindowsAPI and macros are triggered in case something is changed. This means, it won't work on Linux.
Of course, update function must do something more meaningful than changing the B14 cell in the 3rd sheet.

I have to write some data into existing xls file.(i should say that im working on unix and couldnt use windows)
I prefer work with python and have tried some libraries like xlwt, openpyxl, xlutils.
Its not working, cause there is some filter in my xls file. After rewriting this file filter is dissapearing. But i still need this filter.
Could some one tell me about options that i have.

Ive understood what i was doing wrong, but i still need help.
First of all, i have one sheet that contains some values
Second sheet contains summary table!!!
If i try to copy this worksheet it did wrong.
So, the question is : how could i make summary table from first sheet?

This is how you will append additional rows using openpyxl.

If you are on Windows, I would suggest you take a look at using the win32com.client approach. This allows you to interact with your spreadsheet using Excel itself. This will ensure that any existing filters, images, tables, macros etc should be preserved.
The following example opens an XLS file adds one entry and saves the whole workbook as a different XLS formatted file:

I am having problems appending issues appending data to an xls file.
Long story short, I am using a program to get some data from something and writing it in an xls file.
If I run the script 10 times, I would like the results to be appended to the same xls file.
My problem is that I am forced to use Python 3.4 and xlutils is not supported, so I cannot use the copy function.
I just have to use xlwt / xlrd. Note, the file cannot be a xlsx.
Is there any way i can do this?
I would look into using openpyxl, which is supported by Python 3.4. An example of appending to a file can be found https://openpyxl.readthedocs.org/en/default/. Please also see: How to append to an existing excel sheet with XLWT in Python. Here is an example that will do it. Assuming you have an Excel sheet called sample.xlsx:
from openpyxl import Workbook, load_workbook

wb.save("sample.xlsx")
